F36 LCI taillights retrofit done, but have some questions

Hi everyone,

Besides the rocket high price on the upgrade,
I love how it makes the car look much better.

I followed the instruction on the forum with how to
do the wiring. I cut the plug off the old lights and
make it "plug and play" for the pre-LCI setup.
I should have went with the plug and play harness
but I wasn't sure about the price ($100+)

So what I am confused about is, all the lights work
100% and I read some threads where everyone said
it required coding...i do get an error code when the car
starts saying some "lights malfunction" but all the lights
worked just fine....anyone know if the coding is just to get
rid of the error code? or does it serve a real purpose?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Coding eliminates the bulb checks since you are now led. It'll also change the bulb value to led. It's simple to do with a cable and esys. It's not so much "coding" as it's just changing a value from a drop down and saving the change to the car.

Any idea if it could be done in "Expert Mode" in Bimmercode?

I did my research and think it can be done in bimmercode expert mode
(or even the regular mode" coz i saw an option where you can disable
the cold/warm check of the lights....

i will know in 2 days after i get my OBD bluetooth device from amazon!

hey i just did the coding today with bimmercode, you dont even need
to go into expert mode...you can just code the rear REM unit
with the option on the APP....super easy!

Hi man, So you only had to code the hot / cold control with BimmerCode?
No need to code other things with E-sys?

the inner lights are powered using a new wire to the unit in the back of the car
so that is not related to coding

what harness did you use to install the lights? It will required you to run a separate wire to the REM unit from the light

Hi F36 or anyone who can help. I also have a 2014 GC and want to retrofit the lights. I bought a harness of ebay but I have two wires to connect to the REM but the Pin locations are already taken. Do I need to splice wires?

Any help is much appreciated!!

This is partially true, yes a new wire or harness is required but on older i-step levels you also need to insert the HO-WORD 'HELC' into the FA to enable the inner turn signals. I installed euro blackline LCI tails onto my 2014 using the OEM LCI harness, and I still had to perform this coding. Without it the inner turn signal lights did not blink and the reverse lights did not turn on.

Using e-sys (of course):

1. E-Sys => Expert Mode => Coding
2. Read FA => Name FA "HELC.xml" => Save FA => Edit FA (FA Opens up in FA-Editor)
3. In FA, Right-Click on HO-Wort => New => HO-Wort
4. Add "HELC"
5. Right-Click on FA at top of VO => Calculate FP
6. Verify in Vehicle Profile [x] Aftermarket_Fitment => [xxxx] HELC_LCI_REAR_LIGHT
7. Save FA
8. E-Sys => Expert Mode => Coding
9. Load modified "HELC.xml"
10. Right-Click on FA => Activate FA
11. Read SVT (VCM)
12. Right-Click on REM (the ECU itself not the underlying CAFD) => Select CODE.

Pic highlighting where you need to right-click:

Hi! I am thinking to do the retrofit by myself this weekend and I am concerned about the new wiring. 😀 Any tips or steps you might advise to follow?

Thanks!

Hi. Could you please direct me to where to find intructions for the retrofit? I'm ordering the LCI taillights and plan on retrofitting them on my 2015 428i GC.

Thanks

sorry guys, i don't know what you guys may need to do but i never did any coding on my car. The lights worked 100%...were you guys using new harness when installing the lights or you run the extra wires from the inner lights and tap them into the REM? i think that would be the reason why i didnt need coding...i tap them into exisiting wires in the REM

My car is a 2014 so I needed to perform the coding as I mentioned above. I used OEM taillights and the OEM harness. The coding also eliminates any errors which are likely due to the previous lights being incandescent bulbs and the new lights being LEDs.
