DWS06 rubbing fender liner in hard left turn
2018 F30, everything’s stock. I have staggered 19" 704M wheels, and I just replaced the factory Bridgestone Potenza S001 RFT tires with Continental ExtremeContact DWS06. I went with the factory sizes. Nothing fancy here.
In a hard left turn (the steering wheel is all the way against the lock), I’m hearing some rubbing against the fender liner. The front left tire is rubbing the back of the fender liner. You can reach in and feel it making contact. There’s a small protrusion in the fender liner that seems to be where it’s touching. I took it back to the tire installer who said that everything looked right, and the DWS06’s section width might just be a little larger than the S001’s. He tried using a heat gun to flex the fender liner out of the way a bit, but it’s still making some contact. Wheels are 19x8.0 ET36 in the front, 19x8.5 ET47 in the rear. Tires were and still are 225/40R19 in the front and 255/35R19 in the rear. The specs on tirerack.com do show that the DWS06 section width is 0.1" wider for the front tire (9.1" vs 9") but I have a hard time believing that BMW didn’t leave more than 0.1" of tolerance in there. I’ve triple-checked and all of the sizes are correct. Has this happened to anyone before? I know people run DWS06 on these cars, but I haven’t heard of this problem. i recall another thread where somebody with appropriately sized tire fitment had rubbing on just one side during full lock turns. i believe it turned out to be a loose or broken endlink, can't remember for sure. anyway i suggest checking your suspension components as well.

Thanks for the ideas!
The fender liner’s seated and attached properly. I expected that alignment’s OK because I have so few miles. It occurs to me that when I began my last trip before getting the tires changed, I heard an unexplained “pop” from the front end as I started turning the wheel. It was mildly concerning, but nothing seemed out of sorts, so I continued on. Full-lock turns are rare enough that I might not have done any for the rest of the trip. But the sound may have been something breaking or slipping out of position, and I might have experienced the rubbing with the old tires too if I had tried a full-lock left turn. DWS06 may not be to blame… I’ll have the dealer check it out next week. |

I did the same exact tire swap on the same car and wheels. Haven't noticed the rubbing. But I don't drive it hard like that. I did make a left I turn which may likely requires a full left turn, but no sounds noticed.

I've had these tires on same wheels. Never a problem. Even after I lowered it.
Can you post pics?

The dealer said what amounted to “umm, I dunno, we can sell you a new fender liner” and I said “no thanks.” I picked it up this morning and now it’s fine. No rubbing during turns in either direction. I don’t know if the tech did something to the liner quietly without writing it up, or if something just settled into a better position on its own, but it’s nice for the car to be feeling 100% again.
