Am driving the latest Gen X3 with the 2.0T 4 pot motor as a loaner (B48) while my 335i is at the dealer.
Car has all the latest tech and is nice; however, the one thing that is extremely annoying is the fact that the transmission up shifts super quick to 7th or 8th gear and the motor actually starts to lug and struggle at the low end of the rpm band; as it's not able to produce adequate torque due to the turbo not being up on boost. My sense is this programming has been likely been done to improve fuel economy and improve mpg figures. Being an Xdrive, the car is heavier and the motor definitely lugs at low rpms (which can't be healthy long term). I've configured the sport individual setting such that the transmission is in Sport mode; which keeps the rpms higher and prevents lugging. Extremely annoying and definitely makes me miss my N55 3.0L. The B48 may be fine in 2/3series Coupes/Sedans; but it definitely struggles at low revs in a heavier SUV application; especially with the gearing optimized the way it is. I've read reviews on the X3 and the B48; where the reviewers claim the engine is effortless. I can tell you, definitively, that it feels far from effortless at low revs. I pray BMW doesn't do away with its inline 6 motors. As advanced as the 4 bangers are; the inline 6s, completely change the character of the vehicle and the driving experience (the additional 1.0 liter of displacement probably goes a long way while the turbo is building boost). As an aside, The NBT EVO ID6 and digital cluster are pretty sweet. |
