How do you get through an MoT like that? The smog test in CA and NV would probably pick up an EGR delete straight away and just us failed at inspection.

The chap who tuned it said to just make sure I've given the car a good solid run before the mot and the car is hot hot hot. We did a particle test after the test drive post-remap and it passed so I'm not too worried about that.

It's been coded as being permanently shut so visual inspection won't bring anything up

Plus it helps that I use his mot garage!

Was done at the same time as a remap - egr duty cycle set to 100% or something like that resulting in the egr being permanently closed

So, BMW has agreed to cover this. I'm really glad to see that because none of this was making sense. I'll keep everyone posted. So far, they have agreed to cover it verbally (both from BMW NA and the local Beaumont dealership). However, the part (EGR cooler) is on backorder per the dealership. I'm in no rush, but it's around 2 months already. I just asked them last week to put the battery on a tender, and the service rep said they would. If it gets fixed, I'm satisfied. I don't have an ETA, but it looks like it should all get resolved.

Do I have to wait for a letter from BMW saying they have a part for my car or should I be contacting my local dealership about this?

Doesn't hurt to contact them. I received a phone call when parts were ready.

Buying a certified 328d wagon...maybe?

Hey everyone, ready to pull the trigger and my sales rep said the service light came on indicating and "EGR valve" needing replacement. Said its getting replaced under warranty. I'm now having second thoughts due to potential manifold and long term expensive engine issues. It's got 46K miles and being certified will be under warranty until April 2021. Any thoughts apprecieated...this would be my 3rd 3 series. I loved my first two (gasoline) but this will be my first diesel.

The diesels are def a bit more tricky with the egr and transfer case problems. Just keep up on service and it shouldn't be terrible.

"shouldn't be terrible."...lol not what I was looking for but thanks for keeping it real. Knowing what you know now, would anyone trade their diesel for same vehicle in gasoline? I guess since the warranty will be in effect for a few more
years I'll have some peace of mind if I buy the thing. If the vehicle drives fine otherwise, is there anything else I should ask about re/egr issues? Thanks again--this forum has been great over the years.

If you have a warranty you should be fine and not stressing about anything.

The main concerns for this car are the transfer case (which have a habit of going out every 50k miles or so), the egr cooler (which is now recalled), there are other little issues here and there that are common across all 3 series, but it's not bad.

If I could do it again i'd probably get the 330i wagon, but then again loose a ton of MPG for not much power gain, so who knows.

Just keep up on scheduled maintenance and you should be fine.

I wouldn't trade it for a gas. The gas ones have their issues too, so it's not exactly a trade for reliability. These N47/N57 are going to last for longer miles than the gas counterparts. Also the second gen diesel systems (N47/N57) are massively improved over the first gen (M57).

Transfer case issues are not specific to the diesel, but do show up more often. If you don't have a need for awd, get a rwd sedan. Not many people will take steps to prevent the transfer case issues, so the next best prevention is avoiding xdrive if you have no need.

I don't need x-drive but don't like the sedan, and there's no way around that from a factory optioned car stand point as i'm sure you know.

Just an update. BMW took care of mine. They actually covered it under warranty, even though it had 100k miles on it. To them, it seemed to make sense to cover it under warranty over recall, but either way, they fixed it for me. I also left the car there a few months, which gave them plenty of time to go over options. They changed the manifold and new EGR valve/cooler.

Took my 2014 328d wagon to my dealer last week. I've been using a quart of coolant every 3 weeks. After checking it, I was told I definitely need the EGR module.

But... there isn't one in the entire USA. They were going to contact Germany. The next day I was told they are completely back ordered in Europe.

Then I was told... "you cannot drive this car!" Do you have a second vehicle?"

They would have given me a loaner if I needed one.

MY CAR IS IMPOUNDED until they complete the repair!!! It might take a couple of months... or more!

That's funny I just got an oil change yesterday and he asked me if I wanted them to perform it, i told him no thanks but in my mind i was saying you probably don't even have the parts, but yeah thanks for confirming that.

I'd glady take a loaner but my car isn't using any coolant yet or any signs of issues anyways.

Maybe they meant do you want them to perform the test?

My coolant warning light came on a couple of times and then I just added a gallon ever 3 weeks. It was drinking it.

This was the response from my SA. They have the boroscope and tools to do the inspection, but the replacement EGR isnt available. In the event the car needs the new EGR, they dont want to be out of a loaner and your car sitting on their lot for weeks to months.

The delays are getting annoying. I'm planning to keep my F31 after the lease ends in December. I sure hope they fix it by then, can't imagine BMWFS will let someone keep a lease car with a active recall.

I was told I can't drive the car and they're keeping it until it's repaired which could take months. Someone told me that if car lots have cars that need the EGR module.. they can't be sold. Also in Europe the BMW dealerships are having to find areas to park the affected vehicles.

I'm lucky (and my dealership is lucky) in that I also have an X5 so I declined the loaner. I know that they are limited and they would have to "find me one."

It could take months. I own my car. At what point of waiting do they give me a new car?

I took my car to the dealer for an EGR inspection on Saturday. Monday my service advisor called me and told me it was leaking and would need to be replaced, but that they would need to order the part. He told me today that they expect to have it by Friday.

This is wacky. Your dealer claims he can get a cooler in a week but mar52's SA says there are none to be had. One of those dealerships must be smoking something.
