Oh don't worry it is lightyears ahead of your 11 year old E46 330i. Your old amp distorts at less than half the volume level that the new system can play. Thats my solution for now- turn up the volume and it sounds great.

Awesome! I'll definitely have to try out your settings.. I've been using the e90 settings from this old post.. It sounded great in my e92 before but not so much on my f30. Not enough bass, I put my 100 hz flat

That's good news on that front. One of the things that I do like on the E46 330i is that it has a much richer sound than what I have heard on the 2009 335, or 2008 & 2010 Mini Clubman HK iterations. Which is one of my chief complaints. |

My car arrived yesterday. First order of the day was a good drive, then a good listen in the garage .
Out of the box, flat, I must admit to being very pleasantly surprised. The top end seems to tail off a little early, although being 40 that might be my ears and I may have been running tweeters too hot in my old install. I got the impression that the treble was being boosted a little to make up for the lack of high end response. The bottom end seems fairly muddy with real lows. It's punchy, but true sub bass is not very well controlled to me. I tried messing with the EQ, and I must admit I didn't feel the need to pull out or put in much at all. Perhaps 1 click plus at 100, 1 down at 200, and 1 down at 10K. I will be changing the front speakers when I get the guts to do it, and I'll try the CDT Eurosport 4s I've got along with their tweeters and passives, but for the moment it'll do. Turning L7 off after having it on makes everything sound flat, however I haven't spend enough to work out which I really do prefer. The added pizazz of the L7 does initially sound good, but that might be messing with the lows. More listening needed. Oh, and sitting in the rear of an F31 with HK is strange: there's tweeters in the head lining of the boot. Not quite sure what that's trying to achieve. |

Had another play & audition today. For listening to music, L7 off seems best: whilst L7 does give things a bit more "zip", it seems to introduce a slight echo which annoys me after a little while.
It's not a bad system at all. Will try to see if I can borrow an RTA. |

Updates?
@ GlennQNYC
Curious if you've had a chance to test the HK system with a non-EQ'd sound source? I'm sure I speak for others when I say that I can't wait for your updated settings! Cheers |

I find I often fluctuate the Bass control between flat and +1, but occasionally -1 depending on the listening material's mix.

I really have high hopes for the HK system. Are the doors well padded to handle the system though. On the base system the doors are not well padded and from the inside everything sounds ok but from the outside it sounds like you are listening to some cheap system with audible distortions. I hear this when I close the car doors while the music is playing and then lock the car to turn it off. It's terrible.
On a side note I replaced my E70 X5 and the one I had before had the base system which was good and better than my F30 base system. The E70 I got has the premium sound system and it's arguably the best listening experience I have ever had in any car. I am yet to max out the volume as I am 100% satisfied at the levels I have reached so far. I am hoping when I pick up my F30 the HK will be at least 80% of where the E70 is and hopefully will have better padding than the F30 with the base system.

I wouldn't be too against having 5kHz and 10kHz flat... The frequency response might be a bit smoother, but the distortion from the tweeters bothers me so I take them down a touch. Still need to get an RTA in the car though. Someday! Treble flat Bass flat L7 on 100Hz +5 200Hz -5 500Hz +1 1kHz flat 2kHz flat 5kHz -1 10kHz -1

Just read through the whole thread and thought I'd share my thoughts, especially since I have a couple of the other cars mentioned (E46 w/HK, E70 w/premium).
First I agree that I really liked the HK in my 2002 330i. The music I listen to tends to be vocal-oriented, not really bass-heavy stuff like techno, metal, or hard rock. The E46 HK is really good at that but a bit light on bass. When my wife got an 2012 E70 X5 with the premium/upgraded stereo I was really disappointed with it initially. The whole thing sounded heavily muted, like I was listening to music from another room through a thin wall. I fiddled with the EQ settings endlessly and after a few months surrendered to disappointment. But surprisingly somewhere along the line I think the system broke in or burned in or something. It now sounds fairly decent. It still has a rather closed-in sound to me , but is fairly pleasant to listen to now. This is very likely just personal preference, as I have electrostatics at home and like a really airy sound. Anyway this is a roundabout way of saying that I'd welcome seeing an update from Glenn in about 6 months after his system has broken in some more. My 2014 335i w/HK I really liked from day 1. For the poster with the E46, the F30 system is definitely better and is my favorite of the 3 cars in my garage (E46, E70, F30). Although I still have fond memories of my 1989 Ford Probe that came with a factory JBL sub in the trunk! Coincidentally my settings for 5KHz and 10KHz match Glenn's - I turned both down one notch. I also admit to fiddling with the EQ settings depending on the type of music - some tracks have me going "arrrrggghhh" and reaching for the bass control. I look forward to trying Glenn's settings for 100 and 200Hz; right now I think I have them flat. Overall I'd say it's a nice system and worth the cost of the upgrade. BTW I think I saw a post from someone at Bavarian sound saying something like, if you don't want to go full aftermarket but still want to improve the current system, try disconnecting the center speaker. Sounded like odd advice and not something I'm going to do, but maybe a professional installer like Glenn might want to give it a try. Last edited by chiefneil; 05-11-2014 at 10:32 AM.. |

FYI: any HK EQ tuning performed while the car is stopped will change the moment you start driving. That is the speed-dependent EQ and bass level feature in the OEM amp working.
Disabling Logic7 just disables the surround feature and not the Dynamic EQ and bass. |

Are you saying we cannot prevent the "the speed-dependent EQ and bass level feature in the OEM amp" from working?

GlenNYC,
First off, thanks; your setting have provided a great basis -- keep them coming! @Technic, Are you saying that what we adjust while stationary will not be the same as when the car is moving? Does the equalizer show the difference?

I have to say, MUY MUCHOS GRACIAS!!!! THANKS VERY MUCH!" I took the settings you suggested and adjusted accordingly. WOW what a difference. It may sound funny, but my Serius Radio in its previous settings sounded like an old AM Transistor radio. Now it sounds sooooo much better as does the other AM & FM settings that I listen to. Appreciated the posting, and have the thread listed to keep me updated. |

The point is that, a single particular EQ curve taken from somebody else may be a good start but it definitely is not static. It will require further adjustments at speed and type of music. |
