New F31 MSport / M Performance owner

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi, I'm new to the BMW community... this being my first BMW and first post on the forum.

I recently replaced my daily commuter from this

to this

It's also my first diesel and so far it's living up to expectations. As you can see the car I replaced is very similar to the 328d MSport. I figured since the outgoing car was more show than go, I might as well save gas while doing so.

One observation so far is that BMW does not know how to calibrate it's electric steering. I had more steering feel in my Audi and Honda S2000. The S2000 platform was from 1999 for gods sake. I also feel the F30/31 could use a wider cross section front tire since it understeers quite a bit... dare I say even more so than the Audi since it had 255's all around.

Other than that, she's been a peach

How do you all rate the turn-in and steering feel on your F30's? Is anyone running a squared setup and does it help with steering feel and turn-in?

Got some new shoes over the weekend and the M Performance rear spoiler. Only had the car for a month and she's looking fine.

BBS LM-R specs are 19x8.5" ET32 and 19x9.5" ET35. Tires are 245 upfront and 275 in the rear. No rubbing so far, the rears are probably as wide as I can go with these specs. The wider cross section front tire has definitely improved the steering feel. Dialling in some negative camber will help turn-in for sure.

I commute 110km a day during the work week and the Audi always required a visit to the gas station around Wed or Thurs. I'm busy enough and some days you just want to get home without stopping.

Add to that the fact that, however fuel efficient a 2L turbo 4cyl is terms of litres/100km, the fact remains that it required premium fuel which costs $0.20 more than regular gas or diesel around my parts.

After all is said and done, the 328d literally halved my fuel costs and instead of refuelling 2 times a week, I can go 1.5-2 weeks between fuel stops.

I loved my Audi's, the wagon pictured above was my 3rd one. They just don't have an AWD diesel in the A4/5 lineup in Canada. Also, they chose to abandon the sport wagon market segment.

BMW just seem to tick all the boxes by offering a 3 series diesel, sport wagon, with AWD, and with MSport

Thanks guys, I'm starting to realize that I like this car because BMW has given us a bunch of M Performance parts that we can add to the M Sport to make it our own. When I had the Audi, I ordered the Sline but then that was it. There were no more add on's.

I have the Dynamic Handling Package (ZPH) and the steering feel from the electric steering rack is not even close to what I get out of my S2000, my old B8 Audi A4, or even my wife's Subaru Outback with hydraulic steering (sad).

I got some steering feel back after changing to the LM-R's since the front tires are now 245's but it still leaves something to be desired. I love the car but it's not what the BMW marketing department used to say it is... the ultimate driving machine

I have a feeling that the folks that track the F30 platform need to go to a squared setup to neutralize the understeer. The staggered setup makes the front of the car push and makes the steering too light. That's okay though... this is just my commuter car so it will never see the track.

Looks great! x2 on the specs, though I'm going to guess 19x8.5" ET32 and 19x9.5" ET35?

I don't find the steering feel as bad as you say and I'm coming from a Audi B8S4. I did change the front camber pivot bearings to obtain some more camber in the front and the feeling did tighten up. Not an inexpensive fix but a nice benefit from the change as I was mainly trying to reduce tire rub.

You sir are correct! Tires are 245 upfront and 275 in the rear. No rubbing so far, the rears are probably as wide as I can go with these specs.

The wider cross section front tire has definitely improved the steering feel. Dialling in some negative camber will help turn-in for sure.

@Jimminez , it's funny I was on the "other" forum (four rings) and noticed that you too are a fan of Nokian snow tires. I have a set of Hakka R2's waiting in the wings for the upcoming winter season. Great minds think alike

Do you still have the S4? I just switched from a B8 Sline Avant which is not an S4 but along the same lines as you. Wonder what your winter setup was going to be?

@F31MSport, I traded in my S4 in March for my F31. My S4 had the Hakka R and now the R2s are out where people are saying are much better for snow traction while maintaining clear weather driver feel.

My original plan last year was to use the stock 19" wheels but tire selection isn't great and don't have Nokians. I'll likely go with 225/45R18 Hakka R2s and I'm searching around for any used set in 18x8/8.5" sets though am leaning towards some BBS SR in matte grey.
