Bringing my 340 (same problem since I got it at 2800 miles) in for service soon. Will advise them to do the same.

No problem! Glad I could help

That sounds exactly like a new bolt torque spec.

Used bolts shouldn't use this spec as it can be over tightened. Glad you worked it out out though! Hate for your bolts to shear later from the over torquing.

My 440i F36 Clunk noise in reverse

My 440i F36 has made this clunking noise while reversing with half to full lock on from the day I took delivery. Still to have my first service but it will be on the list for BMW to fix.

Hopefully they'll be able to.

A 'clunk' might come from more than one thing. It's easy to see if strut bearing bolts are loose. Another in this thread had a caliper bracket bolt loose.

Usually when things are serious, the sounds are serious...but not always. It doesn't hurt to check, but it might hurt badly not to.

I had a new vw that was awd, sold that piece of crap in less than a year. Different system, but made a "clunk" in reverse all the time. Service could not fix the problem.

Rumor has it, diff exploded just out of warranty.

I'd call BMW directly and voice your concerns, if anything serious happens down the road, it will be documented.

Hi,

My car is 2015 F31 x-Drive 320d automatic.

Today it stared to do metallic click when putting it to reverse.

Few weeks ago, I felt click/clunk sometime when turning to the left. I think the problem might be related.

Now today. The click occurs most of the times when putting to reverse.

If I am in the car, I can feel it. It goes through the car.
If I am outside, I can hear the click, coming around the back wheels.
It also occurs while driving and not accelerating. Gear is in and it happens around 1200-1300 rmp.
Also noticed that rear end is rising when putting to reverse. Not sure if it was like this before.

Will go to the service next week. But any idea what might be causing this?

EDIT:
Sadly it is coming from the transfer case.

Reviving this thread as it seems like I've got the same issue on a 2018 340i with just under 5,000 miles. Was the re-torque a problem solver for anyone else?

I resolved my noises by replacing the front brake pads and regreasing the pistons

Maybe they barely loosened up to the point that it would cause a clunking noise in both forward and reverse, more noticable in reverse when in would back into my driveway to park. Bring it to the dealer and have them re torque your strut bolts or just do it yourself. I only brought mine in because it's under warranty and I wasn't sure what was causing the noise. After tightening a few things and doing multiple road tests, the strut bolts getting torqued down resolved the issue.
This seems to be the exact same issue I'm having.

So I was getting the clunk when in full lock whilst reversing. It was clunking and felt like the car was shifting. It would clunk more than once during the same maneuver.
Under normal driving I felt the front end feel slightly loose and a bit rumbly.
So I tightened the strut bolts. The bolts didn't feel loose and barely turned when I tightened them so I didn't think it would make any difference. The front bolts were quite tight, the rear bolts turned about a quarter turn. I didn't tighten the bolt on the strut brace as that requires a torx socket. I also pumped up the tyres are they were a bit low.
For the last few times when I have performed the reverse maneuver. The clunking is gone. The steering now also feels tighter whilst driving.

What was the result of your service visit for this matter?

Thank you so much for this. My 340i is at the dealer for brake flush and I too was having the same issue. I have emailed this to my service advisor. Hopefully they can resolve this...

Next thing is "we never heard anything like it" or "this is standard behaviour", this is what they tried on me... :-(
