Gearbox issue
Evening all,
Recently my 340i with the zf8 gearbox has started switching into park when I stop at traffic lights. It is not every time seems to be intermittent. Has anyone else experienced this and what was causing it. Thanks Stu |

Can't remember where I read it but people said it was normal in some situations. Sounds like you are having it do it a lot though. Still in warranty? Are you in manual(gear shifter to the left) when this happens? |

Were you in a lot of stop start traffic? Could be a protection measure against the torque converter getting too hot. Could also be there's some problem with the cooling system. If you've got an OBDII dongle I'd suggest looking at the transmission oil temperature to check it's in spec.

Have had this happen to me twice in the nearly 4yrs I've had the car. Never did fathom it out just assumed I'd done something wrong and kept quiet

It never in stop start I’ll just pull up to a set of lights with it in drive and it switches to park. Only seems to happen at lights presume it could be the wait rather than constant stop start. Yes it is still in warranty looks like a visit to the dealer. It’s happened 2 or 3 times in the last few weeks. Same as you Ro go to pull away and your sitting there looking like a bit of a twat revving away and not moving

Actually had this happen to me again today. Put car in drive and drove 200yds up the road to stop on a T-junction before turning left. ASS cut in as I waited for a car & cyclist to pass. As I took my foot off the brake the engine started up and the car was in neutral!! Both hands were on the wheel at all times. Normally I turn off ASS but there is obviously some very rare condition that triggers the car putting itself into neutral

Yeah was definitely neutral as I didn't have to press the button to engage Drive again. Happens so rarely but car is due in for it's MOT in the next six weeks and has extended warranty so maybe I'll mention it to them.

This seems to happen on mine after the engine has been 'stopped' for a while (say at traffic lights) then it restarts on its own, without taking my foot off the brake. 90% of the time in these circumstances it goes into park.
I'm now ready for it and react accordingly. I'll get round to visiting the dealer soon. |

It never happened again I called the dealer and they thought it was a feature to prevent overheating of the gearbox I believe. I am going on for a service next month so will get them
To double check and report back then. |

Chaps had a service yesterday and there is a bmw bulletin regarding this. My car has not flicked up any codes so nothing they will do until it does it again. Worth popping in an seeing what they will do. Presume it could be an update but would be good to understand if you get any feedback.
One thing to note my battery was apparently low So they did mention that could be a cause. |
