BMW 340i steering issue - URGENT PLEASE!

Hi, please see the below email I'm going to send to Bowker Blackburn tomorrow and the links to the videos please below.
It's been ongoing since last October and driving me mad.
Anybody have any idea what it is? I've searched the Internet and this forum but can't seem the find the exact same issue.
Many thanks.

-------------------------------------------------

I'm sending you this email as per my phone call earlier.
I've now bought the car in for this issue to Bowker twice since last October when I purchased the car as an AUC car and the issue hasn't been identified or rectified.
The attached videos show clear proof of the steering "clunking" but the cause has not been identified.

I have sat in many BMW cars over the years including one friend whose had an M3, an M6, an M135i, and currently has an M850i, an M5 and a 530e. Another friend had a 330d and currently also has a 530e. Another friend has a 335d currently and my father has had 2 1 series in last 3 years. None of them BMW cars, or any non BMW cars I've ever sat in or heard have a clunk like that.

The videos provide proof of the issue, ongoing since purchase and its annoying to say the least.

The issue occurs regardless of driving modes, at low speeds seemingly when the steering wheel is being straightened, in drive or reverse. It happens regardless of cold start or whether the cars been driven for an hour.

It seems to be coming from the front of the car, I assume some steering related issue.

Now that there is irrefutable evidence of this, from these videos recorded, I would like this to be escalated and resolved.

all pads and discs replaced under warranty since purchase due to the brake squeal common issue.

genuine, from dealer.

brake squeal eventually mostly went away by itself. is present maybe 5% of the time now. however, steering issue and brake issue are separate.
as I say, brakes barely squeal now, and haven't noticed them occurring simultaneously.

Strange, this looks/sounds exactly like my Pagid pads which were slightly too small for the calipers.

I'm no expert, but in my completely not learned experience, brakes seem completely irrelevant to this issue. Without sounding rude of course!

Defo no aftermarket anything on the car

Well in the videos it only happens once when moving forward, and then again only once whilst reversing, exactly like loose brake pads/calipers.

it took a lot of effort to capture the vids! wind outside therefore went to a car park, environmental noise, engine had to be in eco because MPPSK is too loud, phone mic quality, video compression etc.

but anything is worth a try, I'll mention it tomorrow certainly, thank you.

Did you have the sound before they replaced the pads?

That’s exactly what I thought. I had Alcon 4 pots with Ferodo 2500 pads and they did exactly this when moving from forwards to reverse. It was the pad slightly smaller than holder being dragged forwards or backwards under braking and was absolutely fine, had to live with it.

And there’s no point waffling about your experience of other BMW models, how many identical cars to yours have you sat in, they won’t be interested unless it’s a like for like car as they’ll all be different.

PS might be worth putting please and thank you in your email too. (You have to us but not to them.)

That's what I'm hearing. Sounds very much like brake pad movement to me.

That's definitely the question that has to be asked.

OP, try driving straight forward and brake lightly, then reverse and brake lightly to see if it still happens.

Not sure if I'm honest. Possible, unsure.
I've mentioned the issues as suggested by Teaston to Bowker when I emailed them earlier.

I had a very very similar sound on a Saab 93 after I had the brake callipers painted, turns out the brake calliper was not torqued up on one side when they put it back together, allowing it to shift back and forward and make that sound.

Is it only coming from the right side?

The sound has that 'echo' which fits with brake induced chatter.

Could be pad movement. Difficult to tell, without being able to see the brake lights on the car, whether this is happening when the brakes are being applied.

Sounds like a two-stage noise, unless it's coming from both sides of the car but at slightly different times.

So just a little update.
I've tried the driving forwards and back thing Teaston suggested and I think you expert's may have cracked it!

Cars booked in for Monday.
Spoke to servicing guy yesterday. He passed it to the head workshop guy, who said get the car booked in straight away.

Pad knock. Mines on factory everything and has done it since new pretty much. Same with the other cars I've driven with the 4 pot brembo calipers.
