Question: Charge Pipe Diameter

Has anyone measured the stock Chargepipe and TIC pipe compared to an aftermarket unit? Is there a difference in size?

The question is promoted by this thread: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1867626 Where according to the product page linked by the OP - an increased diameter over stock was mentioned.

The only TIC and charge pipe I can confirm are larger than stock come with the Wagner Evolution 3 intercooler, per their product description:

Quote:
The stock click connections have been [eliminated] and increased to a connection diameter of Ø65mm/2,56Inch for inlet and Ø76mm/3Inch for outlet, so this kit comes with reinforced silicone hoses as well as 3 aluminum chargepipe. The result is excellent cooling properties and a lot less pressure drop then the stock intercooler
Wagner seems to attribute lower pressure loss with increased flow from the larger diameter piping, which make sense.

Just wondering.

If you were trying to compare volumes of the stock and aftermarket pipes it would not be an easy measurement because they are so irregular. I would do it by fluid volume by filling each with water and measuring the total amount each holds.

If I was assuming that the largest, smoothest airflow pipes make a difference on the F3x N55 then I would install Charge Pipe and TIC Pipe from Evolution Racewerks. And the Air Intake and Turbo Inlet Pipe (v2) from MST. They are all the cleanest that I've seen. Links below:

Hope this helps!

Interesting - Chargepipe 3" / TIC 2.5" -

Remember that the TIC goes a much shorter distance than the charge pipe in the F3x N55

I think the "smoothness" of the CP and inlet vs OEM potentially makes a bigger difference than size. The OEM CP has some flex sections that would really disturb airflow. The OEM inlet has the same thing. The aftermarket CPs have a coupler and diameter change which isn't ideal and different brands approach this differently (some have couplers that change size while others have a single size coupler and the pipe changes size). Because we are in a turbo application through i honestly think these changes might be negligible and we probably arent gaining any measurable change in performance just by installing a TIC or CP and the effects they have on flow. I didnt see any change in WGDC or anything from my TIC install. The VRSF TIC did seem to be a larger ID than the stock TIC (the rubber host part is pretty small), but at the same time the welds inside the pipe were not very good and looked like they could disturb flow. The other thing people have talked about is the OEM TIC swelling under boost and that potentially affecting throttle response.

I would 2nd johnung's logic behind measuring them using fluid volume if you really wanted to compare, otherwise its not really possible. I would also note that all except the wagner 3 are limited by the connections on both sides.

What is that that thread title…I don’t even…

I am the worst multitasker out there, don’t ask me to make threads while I’m working.

I’ll be doing some reading tonight
