Well..... that is a good thing if the sound you have it what I have so I don't have to spend the money on a new turbo. The sound seems like it's coming from underneath the car? I'm driving out to a secluded area so I can attach my gopro to the car at various points to record the sound

KC328_F30 awesome please keep us posted. I'm looking at options on how to put a high temp washer between the wastegate arm and the flange it attaches to on the turbo to reduce the space there and possible get rid of the rattle if it's that.

Do you guys also have very loud rattle at cold start? I have rattle every time I start the car and it lasts as long as cold start sequence so something like two minutes. It does not sound nice so I would like to fix it but I have not found definitive answer if it's really a wastegate or something else.
I've tried to hear where it's coming from but it's hard to say. It sounds like it's coming below the car and that's why I'm wondering if there is something loose in exhaust system? I don't hear any rattle when I'm driving but then again the rattle is not audible inside the car anyway. I only hear it if door or window is open. Like you would probably guess, the dealer has no idea what it could be... I have tried to keep the wastegate actuator at still by hand but that doesn't make any difference in rattle. But I guess the rattling is happening inside the turbo anyway, right? |

kobluna If you have the stock exhaust check the flap that's in the exhaust tip and also the valve that moves the flap. Usually the clip that's there goes missing. That get loose and create a rattle. In my case I have an aftermarket exhaust with no flap.
Look at this thread on that https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=972489

Solidjake I should have emphasized it but I have 320i so I don't have exhaust flap. My exhaust is stock at the moment but I'm planning to get aftermarket dual exhaust at some point.

I've just started noticing the rattle in my wastegate arm as well. I'm 2014 328, N26, EWG, and around 44K on the car. I hear the rattle when the car is at idle and it visually has "play" in the arm. Did I hear earlier in this thread that because of this my turbo may on its way out? Please confirm

If you listen to any N20 or N26 car you'll hear the signature jingle. I've had it looked at by two independent Euro shops and both told me that unless you hear rattle on acceleration, it is working as designed. They also said that (following other commentors experience) the rattle would come back pretty quickly with a new turbo. Only way I could think of "fixing" it would be to have an aftermarket wastegate system fitted that doesn't slacken up so much when off throttle.

Any update anyone? Looking at the Bimmerworld MHI turbo as a turbo replacement for this year. But the questions is does that one suffer from the rattle as well?

MHI seems like the best option regardless of this issue, though.

Hi guys. I am from UK and have exact same issues as you guys. Had the car 9months. Thought exhaust sounded rough and got rougher. I had the timing chain and a new wastegate actuator fitted which eliminated most noises. But I am still getting the exact same noise as described here it’s driving me mad. I hear it lounly on cold start ups and it’s not coming from the wastegate (Cos I started with bonnet open) unless the sound literally travels down so I hear it under car but this doesn’t make much sense???
In comfort I hear the tinny rattley sound also coming from the drivers side (pass side in USA) front wheel under the car. I mainly hear it when driving down en closed roads whereby the sound echoes off the walls or surrounding bushes/trees etc (quite enclosed, I also reckon you could hear it while in a drive through too). The bmw specialist thinks I am mad. Howver, soon I put it in sport mode the sound is nearly gone. Change back to comfort and instantly the tinny rattley noise returns. The bmw spec thinks it’s normal and is just a little play in the actual watergate flap which will not damage the turbo etc. The wastegate noise sounds more like a light knocking or a simmering pot and the lid is rumbling. Personally I think there is something in dp or middle silencer that’s caught/stuck and rattling or the sound resonating from the flap in the tips and is coming back up the exhaust system. Anyway it’s driving me mad. Doesn’t make sense but expect better than my £15k car to sound like an battered french car. Last edited by 328iking; 06-25-2019 at 04:35 PM.. |

I had this same issue on my car. Had the entire turbo/wastegate replaced recently and I would say the rattle is about 90% gone to the point where I can drive with the windows down and its not annoying.

I don’t think I can afford a new turbo and the mech said the turbo is fine and that any wastegate rattle won’t damage the turbo

Tried to get a vid from in car (didn't have time to put the gopro somewhere in the engine bay) you can hear it best towards the end of the vid. That rattle/rasp/zzzzzz sound. Is that what you guys have?
I'm going to tighten my actuator arm a little bit tomorrow and make a vid of the process

Definitely let us know how adjusting the arm goes, I believe the arm adjustment is the same on EWG or PWG so that'll be universally helpful.

Man I can't imagine how it is for you. It's driving me mad. I will definitely let you know. Results are immediate when adjusted so crossing my fingers. Just need it tight enough to remove any slack in the arm.
