The reason cutting is involved for any axle back is because the factory exhaust is one piece from the downpipe back. If you are changing just axle back or just midpipe, you need to cut. If you are changing both no cutting required, just drop it out. I will add, that the AWE axle back is just another resonator, not so much a muffler. It's flows well but does sound incredibly loud with a catless DP. I installed my stock CAT back and love the sound now. Still on the loud side, but stock CAT, AWE midpipe and AWE axle back allows for plenty of growl and burbles (even without a tune like BM3). For a more refined sound with a catless DP, go with AWE midpipe, BMW MPE.

I see, thanks for the recommendation!

Agreed! Catless downpipe and MPE sound great together, definitely not too loud

As a sidenote, you wouldn't be interested in trading your AWE muffler for my MPE would you? Sounds like you thought AWE and catless was too loud, so we could swap so you get quieter and I get louder... Just a thought

I've been thinking about getting an AWE catback, but I already have ER catless DP + Remus axl back. I want to get rid of the 2nd cat (mid pipe) does AWE sell just the midpipe or u would actually have to get rid of the Remus an go with the AWE catback?

You can buy the midpipe by itself.

Yeah but how about fitment issues? I don't want to just buy the midpipe an find out there's a fitment issue.

I couldn't tell you from first hand experience. I still have a stock exhaust on my car, but as far I know the AWE midpipe fits like oem. Noelified stated it only requires cutting when you are bolting it on to a stock exhaust, as the stock exhaust is one piece.

I plan on getting the AWE midpipe and an AA exhaust. I am hoping I dont have to do any cutting, but if the tips on the exhaust stick out too much, I got my dremel ready.

I think you will be fine, honestly. Maybe, one of the guys with more experience on 328i exhaust set ups will chime in.

You should easily be able to go AWE midpipe just bolt in. How was your Remus axle back put on? Did you DIY or did a shop do it. If it wasn't welded up to factory midpipe you should be fine. The factory muffler had to have been cut to remove it. I'll take a pic of factory Cat back so you have an idea what I'm talking about.

If you are replacing cat back with aftermarket it should all be bolt on. Unbolt factory system at DP and it's all one piece that drops, from cat to tailpipe. Then bolt on AWE midpipe to DP and then AA muffler to Midpipe. I don't have experience with AA but if Renan axel back it must be made to fit factory or aftermarket midpipe at same location.

You know.....I might take you up on that offer. Once I figure out what I want to do about DP. Catless or high flow.

I know this is an old comment, but for anyone else here's how my car sounded with an ER downpipe and stock muffler, it basically sounds like an advanced dyson.

A shop actually installed my axle back exhaust, if it's true that the AWE midpipe fits like OEM then I'll give it a shot.

For what its worth, I love my DINAN axle back, sounds deep and "thick".
Only thing is it is quiet at high RPMs. Curious to add a catless DP one day but keep my 2nd N26 cat to see how it sounds.

I am running the Dinan axle back too and loving it. Even with a catless down pipe it is still a very mature and smooth tone. It is almost too quiet, but I am happy its not any louder late night and early morning. The cold start is pretty loud, but it settles down nicely after a minute.

Indeed!
Did you say you installed one for a 330i on your 328i?

I believe it was for a 430i, but could have been a 330i, I forget, but it definitely was not being advertised as for a 328i. It looked like a really close fit and was listed at $500 on ebay, so I jumped on it. I figured if it was off by a few inches or degrees the exhaust shop would be able to sort it out. It fit perfect.
