I read a technical bulletin from BMW about the upgraded fuel system on the b58tu engines (m340, supra, etc) I believe they updated the design of the injectors, hopefully eliminating some of the failure points. I'm sure it's a long shot, but I wonder if they could be made to work on the b58b30a from the f30 cars (similarly to retrofitting the tu hpfp)

Being unable to operate outside stock parameters doesn't make an injector unreliable.

If it really becomes widespread BMW will issue a revised injector (ex, N54) and/or offer extended warranty on them. Just remember forums by their nature magnify perceived problems.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but have a look at the pictures of the B58tu changes I attached.
I'm not sure if the new honing process has any significance impact. Last edited by 440MIA; 02-02-2020 at 09:12 AM.. |

Would these changes not lead someone to believe that BMW knew that their cylinder honing and injectors on the b58b30a were problematic in enough cases to make a difference?

Anyone have any thoughts on something like Lucas upper cylinder lubricant and injector cleaner? What's really the cause of the injector getting stuck open?
Not questioning anyone, but you would think that would be noticeable before damage occurs. Sounds like damage is limited to the bottom end at least. Can't one get just a short block from BMW? |

Trust me, that was the first thing I looked at. You can get it for like $17k and change through a discounted dealer online, but still... |

https://parts.bmwnorthwest.com/p/BMW...iABEgK9cvD_BwE I guess it does say short engine. I hope that comes down soon. Have you looked at the cost of sleeving? Can’t be more than that. You could do some pistons as well. At least you’ll have something stronger. |

An injector stuck open is not the same as it being dirty. The internals are damaged and not functioning. You would have to improve the internal design to be more robust. I'd say the TU injectors would be more susceptible to failure since they operate at higher pressures.
The only way to monitor it is to log cylinder timing and AFRs. The car won't necessarily run rough at first. |
