Must be BMWs. I've been around catless cars and the smell was pungent but in all honesty never been around a catless BMW. Or maybe I have and just haven't noticed if the smell isn't that bad.

Yeah, we lucked out in that aspect.

You'd be hard-pressed to notice the smell even if you were looking for it. I've literally stood behind my car just to get an idea and there's an extremely subtle undertone of a gasoline scent, and even that is barely noticeable. With my windows rolled down at a traffic light it's essentially nonexistent.

I'd still turn my engine off if I were to get pulled over but realistically it's a non-issue.

The sound on the other hand...

Speaking from personal experience if you get pulled over you will get a state ref, where he will look over your whole exhaust system.

I was already state ref'd with the new exhaust ticket. $200 Fine for loud exhaust only

What kind of setup were you running to get the state ref?

I'll take some decibel readings on Sunday. But I'm pretty dang sure the MPE on a 328 is gonna be well below the 95dB limit.

We have a thread going with some decibel readings . Even the stock car exceeded the 95dB limit at redline, and all the modified cars blew it away.

Yes, any cop can give you a state ref ticket if they want to. That part of the law hasn't changed.

That sucks though, sorry to hear that

State ref takes a dB reading at the ~4200 rpm range though not redline.

So then a stock car would pass, still probably not a modified one.

Yea most likely. I was looking at the chart you linked great information btw. I was looking at the parameters of how it's being measured and they're different from ca state ref. State ref measures 20 inches away from the exhaust at a 45 degree angle which could have a big difference on the decibel level being read.

Man... if you manage to get state ref'd for only MPE without any other mods I'll have lost all faith in our state.

Also, I'd strongly recommend looking into a tow-hook license plate mount if you really want to make sure cops can't find any other reason to pull you over. Keeping it on your dash won't suffice.

Yah, I figured they measured differently than we did so that will definitely skew the results big time. However, we measured at 3 feet, they measure at less than 2, and we were still getting way over 95dB. So still safe to say any form of modification to the stock exhaust will fail you.

What are they going to do with the M and AMG cars I used to see rolling around. At 4k rpm, those are going to be pretty loud too...kinda lost faith in our state...

You guys are measuring 3 feet directly behind the exhaust correct? Even though state ref measures 20 inches they offset at a 45 degree angle so the sound waves aren't going directly to the dB meter which has a huge impact. The 3 feet directly behind the exhaust is going to give a higher reading then the 20 inches offset at 45 degrees.

I'm going to grab one of those actually next time I plan on going to LA. Cops in my area are pretty relaxed about the front license plate as long as it's visible also pretty chill with window tints I see people rolling around full Limo tint all around. It's kind of one of those things where they're not going to stop you for it but if they pull you over for doing something stupid they're gonna go ahead write you up for those as well while they're at it.

Ahh gotcha. I thought by 45° angle you meant 45° angle off the ground, like the dB meter they're using is propped up to a 45° angle straight behind the exhaust lol. Not sure why that's what I thought but... yah then they're readings will be lower than ours.

Not correct. Its 3750 rpm for cars that have a power rating at 5000-7000rpm.

I used to just have a muffler delete when I got the ticket.
I've already been to the state ref

Good to know I've been hearing different ranges from speculations it's great to have some first hand feedback.
