New LR Defender

So a pretty important car for JLR in terms of the brand. This is like replacing (insert name of your favourite legend football player/manager).

Tough task. What do we think, surely they've thrown a lot of time at this. However I can see it just developing slowly over time like the last gen/models.

I think a lot will depend on if they have compromised too much trying to make it into a comfortable family vehicle rather than a go anywhere do anything rugged workhorse which is where it excelled. Reliability will be a major factor and not JLR's forte at the moment.

Thanks for the link Chris.

Looks pretty good, although I'm not keen on the c-pillar treatment. Seems relatively shallow glass too.

As you say, they've taken a long time over this and hopefully have it right. Will be interesting to see how much it cannibalises sales of other models.

I'm looking forward to a drive in one when I get chance!

I've got mixed views on this.

I like the profile shape - harks back to the original Defenders. Looks good.

Less keen on the design of the front - looks a bit cartoon-esque.

The face scarf may get blown off at speed.

Where is the market for this?

Discovery is just as capable with more comfort.
Pick up trucks have stolen the market for utility vehicles.

Even the utility firms like national grid and power networks now use L200 and Toyota invincible type vehicles.

This I feel will be reserved for the g wagon lovers

I like it. Looks like a modern interpretation of a Defender, and it sounds a lot more appealing to a lot more people too.

I was about to post the same! Just watched the video and I absolutely love the design of the new Defender. Think they've done a great job.

I thought he same. Despite the car having something of a giant kid's toy look about it, I actually rather like it. The rounded edges (the antithesis of what BMW has done with the 4 Series Concept) give it a slightly futuristic and intriguing appearance.

Watched the CarWow review last night. Really like the new Defender, especially with a utilitarian set of spec options. Very cleverly designed car.

While the looks and design of the defender are well thought out, the price points are not.

Why would you buy a defender when you can have a range rover for less money? They are not suited to what previous versions were designed for and will just be a posh 4x4 for mum's to drop their lazy kids at school.

I am glad I have a 21 year old defender and i am unlikely to swop even if it was 20 grand cheaper.

No doubting the price points are greedy. A well specced Defender 110 will apparently easily hit £80K.

I like the design but I wouldn't part with that amount cash. Of course, if they have a strong GFV then the PCP market will be awash with them.

You can't have a full fat Range Rover for less money, though - perhaps a Velar? Appreciate there is also crossover between very high spec 110 and low spec RRS, but they are very different kettles of fish.

I'm sure they will be immensely capable offroad and without the huge size that the Disco brings. Although wading depth and towing is the same, I'm guessing that the 110 has much better approach/breakover/departure angles.

I genuinely think that it's added something new, worthwhile and attractive to LR's range. A good upgrade option for D3/D4 owners as well, now the D5 is even bigger and a bit of a softy in looks.

For those confused by where this fits in LR's range, hopefully DonkeyApple on PH won't mind me copying his post from there:

Evoque - for women who inject fat from their arse into their face so as to look like Joan Rivers.

Velar - for urban dwellers on trend at all times.

Disco Sport - elderly people who don’t want to be the in the Kia at the garden centre.

Disco - myopic Catholics.

New Defender - people who don’t consider Westfield shopping centre a liesure activity. And artisan mushroom vendors.

Think they have nailed it with the design, really like it. Looks great in base or high end specs. Not many cars can pull off white painted steelies but this can.

I think the well specced 110s will appeal to all of the Discovery 3 & 4 drivers who are not that fussed on Discovery 5 which moved up the price band for unwanted luxury.

D5 is a funny one - high price for a very high spec that crosses over with Range Rover in so many ways. But there are actually lower specs which are incredible value, but they sell in the minority.

This definitely nails the D3/D4 replacement properly. I always felt that they went too far in a different direction with the D5 - and that's coming from someone that bought one and loves it!

It looks like they bought the blueprints off a Chinese knock off car company.

I know this is a copy of the Defender concept, but it could just as easily been the other way round lol.

Dammit my laptop speakers are broken, he just said the LR Defender tops out at £80k.

No chance.

The 110 with just the Explorer Pack and the Satin Protective Film is £85,418 OTR. Now let's add the Towing Pack (£1105), Comfort Pack (£275), Cold Pack (£255), Solar Windscreen (£275), Front Undershield (£420), 3-Zone Climate Control (£750), Park Heat with Remote (£!000), Loadspace Fixtures (£205), WiFi Hotspot (£240), Secure Tracker Pro (£710), Chequer Body Protection Kit (£312)... we're over £91,000 and there are still things I haven't added yet! Now chuck in a new laptop with working speakers

That has more G-wagon in it's overall shape and in the sides in particular. And a bit of Suzuki in the front. To my eyes at least.

You'd have to be a bit free with money to spend that though

I imagine a top spec disco would be similar money - again, a tough call against a base (ish) full fat Range Rover. My list was about £78k iirc, but I missed off a number of packs and options that could have added perhaps £10k.

My 110 would be in the region of £55-£60k from my one run through on the configurator. It doesn't look/feel like it needs so many bells and whistles.
