Too much too soon?
A friend who lives a couple of minutes round the corner has done really well for himself one way or another.....
Cash rich, he has one of those M Sport Ford vans, the Mrs has a new Panamera, they have 2 kids the daughter has an AMG Line A Class and they’ve just bought their 19 year old son a new E53 AMG Coupe which he is royally ragging the tits off. Nice people but a recipe for disaster? Last edited by Broncho; 09-20-2019 at 05:22 PM.. |

Doesn't sound a very responsible thing to do giving him so much power when he's got next to no experience. Toxic combination I think and I'd agree recipe for disaster.

Yes agree could spell trouble, but were you not on about something similar a while ago with your lad buying a performance car ? Maybe not to same extent I guess.

All depends on the maturity/mindset of the 19 year old, Me? No I was a liability with 40hp at 19 but I had friends that wouldn't have been with 400....

That was our LFC lad, he ordered a Golf GTI but had to cancel as the academy only let them have up to a 1.4.

Sounds sensible really in the long run. I think younger drivers should be limited to a certain level just like motorcycle system ?

I suppose the insurance industry sort of regulates by virtue of the fact that insuring that kind of car would be impossible for the majority at 19. But then I guess there's always the rich few or I suppose company policies as has been pointed out. |

I would feel like my parents wanted rid of me permanently if they bought me one of those at that age.

I don't think it's a guarantee it'll end up in a hedge like everyone here seems to think, although not unlikely unfortunately. I drove an M4 from 19 until I was 23, never got a ticket, never got in trouble, and never had any squeaky bum moments. Taught to drive by a police driving instructor and was mindful of the fact no matter how 'good' of a driver I thought myself, I only had control of the car, not the road conditions, other drivers or happenstance. Didn't drive it like a little old lady by any means, but took it to the track when I wanted to try and push it.
I think it really depends on how the lad was brought up, whether he has respect for others or even his own life, and what sort of social group he has. If his mates are egging him on to put it sideways from the passenger seat then god speed. |

I think it takes just one hairy moment to fully respect a performance car.
I remember when i was young, i threw the car around a bend like i usually do but this time the back end kicked out and i shit myself trying to put it back in line. I was inches away from oncoming traffic and a wall. Remember it like yesterday. Safe to say, that was the last day i drove like a tool. I hope the kid in the AMG or any other young driver experiences a near death experience to ensure life going forward. |
