So I went to replace the alternator, idler and belt today. To be sure it was one of these at fault. I removed the belt, so nothing on ac compressor or alternator. Started the car and Sods law! The noise is still there?!

Am a bit stumped anyone got any pointers, may have to give it to mechanic but much happier to DIY...

Thks

Might the thing between driver's seat and steering wheel that is making noise.

I think I have read about cases of the crankshaft pulley failing, maybe have a look at that ?

That /\. With the belt removed, grab the crank pulley and rock it about. If there's excessive movement, the rubber dampener has failed....and that can take the main bearing behind it out if left like that for too long.

What kind of noise are we talking about? Rattling? Whining? You can get a whine from cold for <1 minute which is probably the oil pump. Cold oil is more viscous so the pump has to work harder.

Maybe get a cheap stethoscope from Amazon and start probing the engine to pin point the source of the noise. Worn out chain guides can make a scratching and/or plasticky rubbing noise.

Hi, this is the noise.

Since this its been into the mechanic, who has had the sump off checked the oil pump and finds no issue with it or the chain. Also the timing chain is OK, sump no sludge or broken guide rails etc.

He tells me all looks fine...not clear what the noise is and replacing the pump may not be the cause. We've removed the drive belt and the sound is still there so not the idler, ac or alternator!
