My AW F32 440i 6MT M-PPSK 405m

A very long time of anticipation has finally come to an end. In the best possible way I might add.

My 440i 6MT M-PPSK has finally been handed over to me and I had my first day of fun with the car.

Just some initial impressions:
  • I'm pleasantly surprised by the ride comfort. My decision to mount the 405m 20" tires was a pure cosmetic one and I had some fear that I would pay for the looks by having to live with a negligible level of ride comfort. But to my surprise the ride is so comfy that I could even drive in sport mode all day long. I assume this is equally a result of the excellent adaptive dampers and my decision to not even start using RFT tires but to opt for the brand new Continental Sport Contact 6 instead.
  • The engine is simply a brutal monster. I have and will strictly stick to the break-in instructions but even if you only use the lower half of the rev band, power and torque are intoxicating. The engine has an inherent urge to rev like there's no tomorrow. And as the full torque is already present slightly above idle, one can decide to either use the diesel like punch from below or the pull from the higher revs. There is no noticeable turbo lag whatsoever in the relevant rpm range (there is some below 1200 rpm but as a natural aspirated car wouldn't have any usable torque there I still think its fantastic) Fuel consumption seems to be in line with the observations made by other B58 drivers.
  • The sound of the M-PPSK (new combined power and sound kit) below 100 km/h is incredible. If you put it in sport, it will grumble, burble, pop, trumpet and scream in such a delicious way that I want to go back to my car right now. Go back there and start the engine again...
I think BMW's engineers did a reasonable good job for the combination M-PPSK, speed < 100 km/h and comfort mode as well. There is a significant decrease of burbling and popping in comfort that might safe your relationship with the neighbours. Interestingly the background grumbling is not as strongly reduced by comfort mode, although it gets a little bit quieter as well. I have to say that I would have prefered if the exhaust would have been quieter in comfort mode though.
The biggest downside of the car so far has been the noise level introduced by the M-PPSK exhaust at Autobahn speeds above 130 km/h. While it seems to be quite easy to control the emitted sound level with the throttle at speeds lower 100 km/h, the increased throttle setting required for medium to high speeds on the Autobahn will lead to a continous loud exhaust tone. One might even call it drone, although it doesn't seem to have a clear resonance frequency like a typical drone would have. This is independent from the selected driving mode but clearly loudest in sport. I really hope that the exhaust will get quieter at high speeds during break-in, as I really love it for everything but the Autobahn.
  • The manual transmission was definetely the right choice for me. I drove the 8-speed automatic and whilst it is an excellent piece of technology, it took far too much driving engagement from the car. My 6MT is technological inferior (but almost saved me the price of the M-PPSK here in Germany) but to me using it is so much more rewarding. Clutch and shifter are excellent by the way. Due to the very high and almost constant (with respect to the rev band) torque of the car, you can basically stay in one of the higher gears for most of the time (but of course it is much more fun to use all of them).
  • I LOVE the alcantara cloth sport seats that come standard with the German M-Sport package. I don't get it why anyone would pay premium for plain leather seats instead (of course apart from those who can't get alcantara for some strange reason). They look great, they feel great, they need almost no care and they very likely also age better.
  • If you ask me, the steering is still not brilliant. I had some hopes that it would be much better than the racks used in the initial F3Xs but - at least without a direct comparisson - I don't feel much improvement. It is extremely precise and accurate, but it has been like this for all F3xs cars since their introduction. What was always lacking is steering feedback. And, to my dissappointment - it still is in this brand new 2016 440i. I'm sure I'll get used to it and it really is no deal breaker for me. Still I can't understand why BMW isn't able to fix this after it has been critizised by almost every review since the introduction of the platform. My car has no VSS by the way.

Well done. Regarding the exhaust noise at high speeds, you may want to code off the artificial cabin sound (ASD). I did this and much prefer it off.

That may be the nicest 440 I have seen yet. A really nice build.

I dont like white cars in general, but BMW white (all of them) just looks so classy and fitting on these new BMWs. Well done!

I believe the LED's are standard on the 440i? They were on my 340i, would assume the same on the 440i.

I remember hearing some beautiful sounds coming out of the exhaust of the 2014 335i w/ MPE and PPK that I drove at a BMW event and can only imagine this must be even better. Beautiful car, enjoy!

This may be the first 440 but no one will no because the owner debadged the car before any pictures were taken. Anyway, congratulations to the owner on the newest 4 series.

I know I must have seen 100 debadged 4series on here. Maybe we will get some engine pics!

Beautiful, simple as that. Congratulations!

So new engine but no LCI for 2016 in Germany, here in Mexico MY2016 is still 435i N55 car for some reason.
