You need more cylinders and more turbos, keep the fuel, just get a 335d.
The 40i boys may be a little bit faster but you can pass them while they're filling up

Proud owner of very boring 320i. I even made sure the the model designation badge remained clearly visible, so that no one would ever mistake it for a superior (340i) machine and try to break in.

39.5 mpg averaged over 3.5 years, mainly short easy commutes at 40 mph.

So yes, it is indeed possible to get 500 miles on one tank.

Made that very same move a few months ago. Once broken in, that 40i engine is a peach.
As the revs climb to the point where the diesel was starting to run out of steam around 4k revs, the 40i is just starting to get interesting. Once you get to 4.5/5k revs, then it starts to get really interesting

That’s a good point actually. I live in Liverpool, aka car capital of the UK. I’d have to de-badge it.

Good to know a fairly decent fuel economy is possible on a 320i though.

How to you manage to keep your license driving like that? Seems there's too many cameras around to be able to drive fast these days.

I moved to petrol because i was sick of having to nurse the DPF.
Had a Mazda 6 2.2 Sport and i loved the torque but had to give it pointless runs down the motorway to keep on top of it.

Just done my commute and it takes me around 15 mins to do the first 2 miles.

That probably doesn’t help the mpg.

I read that next years petrol engines will have DPF's (GPFs) too and some BMW already have them or are due to have them ready for next year.

I have a 1.6 petrol merc and a 2.0d BMW. The mere does around 35mpg around town and 45mpg motor way and is slow. The 2.0d does 45 around town and 63 motorway and quick the auto gearbox is just amazing compared to the merc's.

So I am guessing petrols will be even lower mpg soon. Best option IMHO is hybrid or just wait and let the market sort it's self out.

I know it depends on driving style but there’s no way I’m going to get 500 miles out of a 320i M Sport Auto!

Can anyone shed any experiences on petrol models and how they fare with fuel?

Hi, I have a 320i M-Sport with a sports auto box RWD. I have just filled up my car and I got 485 to the tank with about 10 miles left showing on the computer. I usually get about 450 so this was a bit higher than usual.

My average mpg since buying the car new in Dec 2015 is 38.5 mpg over 27,000 miles. I do mixed driving, motorway, A road and short town trips. In eco pro on a run I have had 53 mpg on a journey.

I had driven lots of high powered BMW''s in my previous job but figured that the 320i was all I needed or wanted. The B48 2.0 turbo engine is good. 0-60 in 7.2s. 290 Nm of torque. Work's well with the sports auto 8AT. (and adaptive suspension)

I have never been a fan of diesel, even when the government were pushing it. If I were to renew my car, I would buy exactly the same car, same spec but with lumbar support...and a different colour just for a change.

Xdrive will give lower mpg, but I bought a second hand set of winter wheels and tyres and they were great last winter, and happy with the feel and handling of RWD.

See if you can test drive a 320i, most would be surprised how good they are.

Get the 40i in whatever form you can, while they still exist. You will not regret it for a second.

I don't know what you have been listening to, maybe the N20 but certainly not the B48. The engine is quiet and refined. In fact it is the same modular engine as the 340i but with two cylinders less, and no fake engine noises pumped through the speakers....not noisy at all.
