Convertible vs. Coupe—No Contest
Just curious why anyone would choose a coupe over a convertible?...They both basically have the same look,performance,handling...only the coupe doesn’t give you the outright access to “heaven”(pardon the pun)...a simple push of a button and you have the wind in your hair and the sun on your face...I may be a little jaded as I have gone from one type of convertible to the next, but I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want the best of both worlds.

First, the convertible costs $10k more, but if that doesn't matter, I have had several convertibles and several coupes. so I have some experience, but not a BMW convertible. If you ever have a minor accident, the most likely thing not to fit right is the convertible top. I think that sunroofs and convertible tops tend to leak eventually and can, occasionally, lead to catastrophe. When I got my previous car (coupe), I coded the comfort access to open the windows and the sunroof if you held the button on the remote. That sounded great if the car was sitting in a hot parking lot, you could open it up as you approach. The first week after I made the change, mu wife was getting something from her purse and accidentally opened the roof and windows. That time, I happened to notice before we had a big rain. Once, I had a convertible where I was driving and we had an unexpected rain when I was about 50 miles from home. I pulled over to raise the top and the top's motor died with the top 1/3 of the way up.

I can't see any scenario where I would take a convertible over a coupe. And, I have had convertibles in the past (2 out of 67 total) but didn't care for the sun and wind and heat in my face. And, as others have said, convertible are more pricey, heavier, and more prone to rattles and shakes. Who needs it?

The difference of structural integrity and it's related weight makes these not the same driving experience. Better sport driver coupe, open top option convertible. I would be surprised if many people are cross shopping both models.

I like the concept of the hardtop convertible, I just don't like the body lines. Up north, it's a complete waste of money. You are either freezing to death, or the sun is baking your melon with just the moon roof open. Wind noise annoys the crap out of me.
Wasn't worth the money to me, as I hardly bust open the moon roof for the above reasons. |

No thanks. Vert weighs too much.

Well living in NC and having the ability to have the top down for every month except December and January, it was an easy choice for me to get the vert. Honestly, I never even considered the coupe version.

I had a 135 convertible years ago. The number of times I had the roof down was minimal and due to being in Australia most of it was in the evening as it was too hot during the day.
Add the compromised boot space and the added weight it just wasn't very practical. I didn't use the roof enough to justify all the compromises and extra cost. |

Never considered weight of the car to be much of a decider one way or another...the difference is minimal as far as speed...I could see handling suffering a bit

I get all the sun and wind I need with the windows and sunroof, and my car still looks good. The same can't be said for a convertible.

Never once sat and thought, you know what I'd rather have a convertible over a coupe, and I'm 54 and a car nut since I was a toddler!
I prefer the aesthetics of a coupe and the lighter kerb weight as well. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with convertibles but I just don't get them. |

The beach is where the the ‘vert really shines...ocean air just smells better...and if I’m being honest...you just get more attention in a convertible...ladies love to be topless

I heard this was the last gen of the hardtop convertible so I bought one. Probably will drive it May-October with the top always down here in Ohio weather.
I did have the top down two weeks ago! It’s Ohio! |

I have had convertibles since 91. They don’t look the same. Likely don’t handle the same. You have to like the top down feeling. Since less than 1% of cars sold are convertibles. Obviously they are for a select few. Personally,i think it’s sort of a silly question. But all the answers are valid. When we were driving around last spring in Florida and it was hot,we contemplated if we still wanted a conv. Then we crashed it and went a month without one. We really missed it. So now we have the bmw.
An open sunroof is no comparison. The wind noise from an open sunroof is much worse than a convertible. When we take the other car,we never have the sunroof open. As a convertible lover,I can think of several reasons not to own one. $10,000 more, costly to fix. Less trunk space. Having to pull over if caught in the rain. Too much sun,too much noise. Love A/C. As an owner,I don’t give a shit about any of the reasons not to own one. Just came back from a ride. |

This is my first convertible. Definitely pros and cons. I only went for it because I was able to buy it from the dealer at trade in value... and a big upgrade from my 328i N26.
While I know a coupe will edge it out better in overall performance. This is mostly just a daily driver and being in Florida, outside 90+ temps, I get a lot of top down time. I do get the OP's jist though, for myself... for a "fun car", would never pick a coupe over a convertible. Same thing for a practical car, would never pick a coupe or convertible over a sedan. For a performance car, would never pick a convertible or sedan over the coupe. Everyone has to pick their own poison. The best part is we have choices to get what we want.
