F30 335i Paddle Shifter issues - upshifts when downshifting!

Over the past few weeks I noticed that pulling the downshift (-) paddle shifter on my 2014 335i is sometimes causing an upshift (+). At first I thought I was going crazy but it happened another couple times, and then this morning it was very obvious: I was on 5th and wanted to down shift a couple of gears before hitting the red light, but it went up to 7th, then I pressed another time just to confirm and it went to 8th.

I searched and found cases where the paddles completely fail but did not find any hits where the car upshifts upon pulling the downshift paddle.

Bought the car new and had it for 5+ years with only 33k miles. M-Sport with sport auto transmission.

That's pretty bizarre. FWIW, I've taken apart the stock steering wheel and the parts are pretty easy to replace. The paddle themselves look like pretty dumb on/off type switches. The have a single, signal wire - so even if they go bad, they theorectically shouldn't anything - and definitely not opposite shift.

You still under warranty?

No warranty.

I read in some other thread that the downshift paddle is wired through the upshift paddle or something like that? I did not have time to read in details (at work).

The cable for the paddles starts at one paddle, goes over to the other, and then goes to the connector on the steering column. I guess that it's not impossible for something to have become messed up in the cabling.

When I had paddle issues, it ended up being the entire SZL, which includes the clockspring. Though my issue only happened when turning the wheel.

Hi M-Sport
I have the same problem shifting up rather than down.
Did you ever get to the bottom of it?

This happened to my bro’s 320d. The garage changed the squib under warranty and that resolved it.
