Oil filter housing leak

How common are gasket failures on the oil filter housing? I'm at about 60K, been monitoring the area for at least the last year, and noticed some oil build up around the full flow section of the oil filter housing.

I clean up the area as best I can (it's a tight squeeze in there), but it feels like the mess just comes back after a while. Understood that oil could just be from a sloppy oil change, but I've been laying down paper towels in that area since I started changing my own oil two years ago.

OFHG leaks are very common with no specific mileage. My buddy's went at 23k. Mine went at 43k and again at 46k. Make sure to change your belt which probably got oil on it

On my 328d, at around 142k miles (and 7-8 years after production date), I noticed more leaking oil from the oil filter housing, immediately after coming back from a Colorado trip with overnight temps of -23 deg F.

I bought all the seals and gaskets to do the job (make sure you get a new coolant output flange!) and plan on resealing it all. It requires pulling the intake manifold, which is an additional 30 mins to the job.

Enabled - Do you know the full list of seals / gaskets that you've purchased for the potential job? Was looking at the job notes in newtis and it does look like a spread.

The N47's OFH is placed on the driver's side of the engine, away from any belts or moving parts. This is part of the reason why I started the thread, unlike the N55, a failed OFHG wouldn't lead to catastrophic engine damage.

I'm at 60K with about 6 years. Taking the car in for the EGR recall as well as some CPO warranty work. I'll add the OFH to the list too.

Sorry. Answered in a hurry at the time and didn't catch that it was an N47

Certainly, here they are:

(From oil filter housing picture)
11428516396 Gasket #5
11428580682 Gasket #8
11428580680 Gasket set #9
11428580681 Gasket set #10 (it should come with 4 pieces, IIRC)
(*optionally, you may replace the actual component for example 11428507697 Entire housing #1)
(**optionally, you may choose to replace the entire oil cooler thermostat 11428507694 Thermostat #6, it comes with gaskets #10)

(From the coolant flange picture)
11127810707 Coolant output flange #12 (it comes with seal. This is extremely important prevention, as over time these can develop cracks)

(From the intake manifold picture)
11618517159 Intake manifold seal/flaps kit #2 (optional if previously renewed)

I chose to buy all original BMW/original supplier for all of these, because it's a bit labor intensive to replace them.

It seems for rubber components, 7-10 years lifespan is the norm, while heavily climate-dependent.

Enabled - Perfect. Just what I needed. I had the first spread of gaskets / o-rings for the housing itself but not the others.

Tempted to wait till post EGR Cooler recall #2 just to confirm if they replace the intake manifold again or not (wouldn't get the Seal for the intake manifold then).

Super common.

At almost 180k miles, I've changed mine about 3 times already, they seem to be going every 40-50k miles or so. Just spend the extra on BMW OEM gaskets and they should last almost the same time.

Maybe I should look on mine... at 130k on my 328d and I haven't noticed a leak yet.

I would say pretty common.

My N55 needed oiler filter gasket & rocker cover gasket replaced under warranty at 60K.

We're talking completely different engines, hardware, fuels, and setups here; experiences with N55 will not easily apply to the N47.

Got the gaskets covered under my CPO warranty. List of parts are similar to what Enabled had:

11-42-8-580-682
11-42-8-580-680
11-42-8-580-681
11-42-8-580-681
17-22-8-511-461 (O-Rings for the transmission oil cooler)

They also omitted the 11-12-7-810-707 coolant output flange, sadly. Hopefully it will start leaking before 2024 when my warranty expires.

Oil and coolant change was required as a consequence. They drained out my LL-04 oil, which only did 1200 miles, and filled it with LL-12FE.
