Wanted to give a big thanks for the DIY video. My water pump failed in the same way recently. I went through about a quart of coolant in a week. After pressure testing I found coolant pouring out the bottom of my pump. A couple hours later I’m now back on the road again.

I took the fan shroud off first and didn’t fully remove the charge pipe…just loosened at the top. Otherwise it was the same procedure and worked like a charm. Thanks for giving me the confidence to do this and save a ton of $!

First, thanks Kern for the DIY! Second, is there a trick to pulling the fan out? I'm 0-2 on getting it out. I can get everything loose and pull it partially up but I can't get that tab on the drivers side to clear the hose to the radiator.

The first time I tried, I thought it was the resonator on the intake getting in the way (I'm stock and video clearly is not). I tried wiggling the intake all sorts of ways until the resonator snapped off. I duck taped the holes and ordered a replacement. 2nd attempt, I figured since I had to take the whole intake off, that I'd have all the room I need to get that fan out. Nope... Front, back, side to side, still couldn't get that tab to clear the hose.

Does anybody have any tips? I might give it one more try otherwise I'll just have to bring it in and have the pros take care of it. It'll be far cheaper than breaking more parts.

Thanks kern417. Appreciate all you do for the community.

How'd you guys know you had a water pump failure? Pressure test?

My coolant seems to be leaking somewhere in the system, again! Randomly checked my coolant reservoir today and noticed it was low. I had the majority of the hoses replaced last year (cost me 5K). Topped up the coolant and going to measure it over the next week.

Thanks.

Honestly that was the hardest part of the whole job. I have an aftermarket intake so it was probably a little easier but what I had to do was use an old license plate to sort of guide the fan out so it didn’t catch on the intake piping. Even then it took a fair bit of persuasion and I thought there was a risk of breaking the plastic but ultimately it had enough give to come out without breaking anything. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Similar to you I was low on coolant. Filled it and was low again within a couple weeks. Then I stated to see coolant on the ground. To identity the source, I got a “rental” pressure tester from Autozone and the problem was immediately apparent as soon as I started adding even the slightest amount of pressure.

For me it was easiest to lift it up from the passenger side first.

Also, you're going to be draining a lot of coolant anyway, so you can remove some of the radiator hoses that are in your way.

Random but i did the same job on my N52 X5 and the tab on the fan shroud swivels. I can't imagine why 10 years later they stopped adding that feature. (See top left)

Thanks for the video, very helpful. My oem charge pipe is disconnected at the top but still attached at the bottom.

All 5 bolts have been removed. Any tricks to remove the water pump? Should it wiggle off or does it need to be pried off the block? Mine is stuck on there pretty good and I can’t get a screwdriver in towards the top of the water pump, like in the video.

That lower charge pipe clip is a pain in the ass. I've only ever been able to get it off with two screwdrivers, one in each side at the same time. One screwdriver should do it, but three times now I've wasted 5-10 minutes trying.

Getting the fan in and out is also a pain. It's like a puzzle piece just be super patient and don't break anything. Eventually it finds it's way out. Plastic junk

Update here. Im still stock (charge pipe, air box, etc). I was able to leave the lower charge pipe connected/clip intact.

I had a hell of a time removing the old water pump. What worked for me - there is a circular indent in the metal casting above the pulley that conveniently fits a 3/8” socket. Socket into the indent and lots of wiggling back and forth and was finally able to remove the water pump. Careful of the two locator pins (approx 12 o’clock and 7 o’clock).

You did a very good job. I also really want to fix electrical appliances in my house but I need more basic knowledge to be able to do so.

im in the same position as you, i didn't fully take off the charge pipe but i cannot for the life of me get the water pump off, i try prying with a screwdriver, pulling and wiggling, and then i tried doing what you did with the 3/8 but it doesnt fit in the spot you're talking about and so i tried another socket and still cant get it to budge, please help

Can someone explain what is the extra pump with house (black) on the coolant pump

Can someone explain what is the extra pump with house (black) on the coolant pump of 340i ?

The left is new one, right is Old one in my car.:

When I checked online, I can see parts with and without this black attachment, but both are same part number (11517643067)
