Its not like the *40 is new.

There is a 640i and 740i and they both make "320HP" and use the n55. I would guess this new B58 will put out about the same, and it will just align the numbering up again.

Man a 350i would be my dream car. I thought long and hard about a 550i before I ordered my 335i and the raw power and straight line acceleration were tempting but I had to go with the better all around performance (braking, handling) of the 335i.

The B58 most likely will be around 320-330 HP with similar torque numbers. They wouldn't let the N55B30 M2 be less powerful than a 340i and that is rumored to be around 365-75 HP.

It's funny that they're sticking the N55B30 in the M2, which leads me to believe that these new modular engines are much cheaper to make and can't handle the extra power like the N54 or N55.

And what about the diesels? 35d has been running the 40d engine (with increased output) for a while, yet they still call it 35d...

By the time we have a 340i as an entry model, hopefully we won't be driving cars anymore, we'll be flying them.

You mean like the turbocharged 3.4 liter "745i" in 1984, the 4.4 liter "540i" in 1997, the 2.5 liter "323i" in 1999, and the 3.0 liter "325i" in 2006? (+ many others)

The "days" you're talking about only existed for a few cars at very specific points in time...

The M3 and M4 are less powerful than the 550i afaik so that line of thinking isn't necessarily true.

And also M don't start out with a power figure in mind if I remember correctly.

Logically the top end 3 and 4 standard cars are likely to align with S4, S5 and the C400 AMG Sport so we are looking at 335BHP plus as a guess.

It is the trend. Old one goes away and new one comes out. Nothing special at all. When you look back in 10 - 15 years, you will find out how old this BXX engine is. I have no problem with the N55 engine I have as long as it runs everyday. 30HP+ really doesn't make a lot of difference. 10 years ago E46 M3 only has only 300HP, and ppl still love it now days.

Sucks for people who just bought a new car.

(340i Owner) What's a N55 335i?
(335i Owner) It's the same as your B58 340i.
(340i Owner) But mine has 5 more I's than yours.
(335i Owner) No it's the same.
(340i Owner) But mine's like a bomber.
(335i Owner) Alright fine. People who have N54's suck.
(340i Owner) Okay I agree!

Very true, but at least SOME of the models matched...

x20 had a 2.0L, x25 actually had a 2.5L, x30 had a 3.0L (at least in E39/E60/E46 days). Is there at least ONE model number today that actually matches the displacement besides the 320i?

By the time everyone got the best old technologies, you'll be onto a new platform which everyone wants again. There are always people waiting out and bashing on new design and lust over new performance. If financially capable, might as well enjoy it first instead waiting for the best year and options that might never be offered. 2014 328 and 2015 330 don't matter! They all depreciate like rock if bought new. But if you're buying used and plan to keep till the end of time, then waiting for the best year does make a lot of sense.

I assume its best to look into engine options and search for future updates just before a purchase since BMW changes so often.

Don't all automakers do that nowadays? Japanese roll out new cars every 3~4 years in Japan. Then, trickle down the tooling to a different country to extend model life and lower costs while the Europeans have more than one update spreads across a longer model life.
