P0301 Rough Idle

This is my sisters car....albeit my project and its in quite a pickle.

She just filled up her gas; engine starting running rough she drove it 30 miles to work with drivetrain malfunction.

I get in car later to see whats up....engine stuggles a bit to start and is running very rough on idle. My body feels it and I'm not a small person. When I rev it past 1.8k it runs totally smooth; only rough on idle...the car has stalled when she attempted to limp home; and she neturaled back into a parking spot.

pulled codes today got P0301. Car has 84k miles and needs plugs and coils done which is happening no matter whats wrong.

now the pickle. my bmw indy mechanic is about a 35 mile tow and I only use him...the tow is easily going to run 200-250 bucks....

so questions.

1. can i just drive it back to him if i drive it in tiptronic and try to keep the revs above 2k and if it stalls just attempt to restart?

2. if it is the plugs how much to do figure the stealership would charge for 4 plugs and coils. (one close by) but if this is something major i dont want to get taken to the cleaners.

3. is it something worse and should tow it to the guy i trust.

Some history; car ran out of gas awhile back and was stranded; dealership replaced plastic fuel tank and two o-rings. and surprisingly this issue popped up after filling up her tank at a shell. bad gas?

thoughts on how to go about this? thanks

My suggestion probably is to limp mode to your trusted indy and go from there.

What car and year, and mileage?

This can be as simple as new spark plugs esp. it is 84k on original ones.

This can also be carbon buildup(there is a recent thread about that too) that requires walnut blasting to clean up valves and such.

thanks for the response...

its a 2014 428xi n26....im going to buy a coil from BMW and install into cylinder 1. if it runs better I will drive it str8 there.

the only problem limping it is; it tends to stall. but i can always just restart. i just dont want catatrophic engine damage..

a stealership is only 4 miles away; but i dont trust them
