F31 Wind noise

Hi all,

I have weird wind noise that seems to come from the driver side when I drive at 140km/h and more.

I have posted a video of the noise that shows that under 140km/h no noise at all...

It seems to come from under the car... and I am pretty sure that the noise is new... I thought it was coming because there was wind... but yesterday when I shot the video, no much wind outside..
How can I isolate the source of the noise ? any idea ?
Please do not say that wind noise comes with illegal speed as 140 here in France is common when overtaking

Kind regards
Steve

You just added another dimension to the wind noise issues typically it would be around the windows

Maybe this sound is not wind noise but transmission issue. I would suggest to send video to BMW dealer and they will help you out. This is not normal noise whatsoever.

That sounds horrible. It might be a floor panel vibrating, or even a transmission issue. Who knows. Get it on a loft and inspect everything.

Not sure what that is, but it's likely not wind noise. Get thee to your dealership.

Hi, thanks a lot for your messages.
It is definitely a wind noise because it simply disappears when there is another car in front of me. The noise is coming when I have the road widely open ... does it mean that I should only stay behind
I looked under the car and could not find anything apart from a center plastic part which is a slightly curved.
Could that be the source of the issue ?
Thanks again for your support.

Hi Steve!

Have you found the source of the problem?
I have just bought a 2012 BMW f31 328i sport line and noticed the exact same noise. It starts at around 150km/h. and stops below that speed.

Do you have any progress in the troubleshooting?

Thanks!!

I bet it is a loose piece of the splash guard under the car that starts vibrating when the airspeed under the car is fast enough. Helps explain why it stops when following a car for instance

Next weekend I will try to get the car on an elevator and inspect everything to see if I can find the source of the noise.

On the meantime, if anyone with the same problem has any useful information, I will be appreciated.

Thanks!

SOLVED!!!!!!!!

HI!

This morning I went under the car and solved the problem!!! The source of the problem could be 2 different things:

After removing the cover under the car, I noticed there was some cables that seemed like it should be hidden behind a bar, but they had slipped under the bar:

It looked that they could flap under high wind, so I tied them up behind the bar:

Also, when screwing the cover back again, I noticed that one of the screws were harder to get right. It was in the front-left part of the cover, and it had to clamp 3 layers together (the front bumper, the cover and some rubber). Here is a photo without the cover, where I am holding that rubber layer:

It took me some time, but I went sure that the 3 pieces were screwed together right (the rubber layer was hard to get right).

After tightening again all the cover, I did a test run and THE F****G NOISE WAS GONE!

So, I´m not sure which of them was the cause, but you should be able to fix it in a few minutes.

I hope this helps other people with the same issue.

Get the car on a lift, use a leaf blower to try and duplicated the effect of high speed driving.

Hi again,

The noise has appeared again like 3 months ago.... (without touching anything under the car...)

I have checked all the screws of the cover under the car, removed it and put it back again... I have even tried removing the cover and the noise continues...

Now I am not sure that the noise is coming from the cover, and I am not sure about the solution I claimed to be valid...

I will continue to try to find the problem. As this seems to be an issue for more people, please share if you find anything.

Yes i have this same noise. Mine happens when i accelerate at certain speeds, 60km/hr and 100-120km/hr. Any advice? Ive check my rear axle and went for servicing. Tyres were changed. It couldnt be wind noise. Probably rear brake rotors are warped?

I'm having the same issue. Has anyone come to any conclusions?

Edit:
The sound and vibration starts at around 120km/h and varies with wind gusts.
I have had the problem before - last 2 years ago. My mechanic thought the problem was a hole in the panel from bottoming out the car. The panel was replaced and the sound dissapeared until today.
Had a look below the car and the panel is fine - all the screws are present etc.

Finally Found A Solution

Hi! after lots of research I found a solution:

in the zone marked with number 2, the cover was flapping a hitting some wiring support.

You can see the marks in this photo:

I put some foam padding between the wiring support and the cover, and the noise dissapeared!!!

I hope this helps someone!!

EDIT: Just to clarify, I have been driving 4 months since I padded this, and the noise has not appeared again.
