Spark Plug Replacement

Everything that I have found online has suggested that BMW recommends replacing spark plugs at 60k miles.

I currently hav 38,900 miles, and yesterday I received a message on the 'My BMW App' informing me that in 1,100 miles I will need an Oil change and . . spark plugs.

Are spark plugs monitored dynamically? Why would I need to change mine at 40k vs 60k ?

All I can think of is that I have MPPSK. Does that put additional wear and tear on the spark plugs?

BMW replaced our plugs with the CPO free maintenance at between 30-40k miles.

Interesting. I am out of factory warranty and on a third party extended. So I won't be covered.

I don't mind doing it - if there is an actual reason to do so. 20k miles early is not chump change . . (or chump miles lol)

Went for a oil change at around the same mileage as you and their computer popped up for spark plug and cabin filter change. Doing at an indy or myself

Generally recommendation is to cut interval in half when tuned. MPPK is mild, so probably not totally necessary, but still worth it... just order through FCP and you will never pay for plugs again. I would do it at 40k.

Agreed. We have a local Indy with a great reputation. Now that I Am out of factory, and our local BMW dealership is far from 'impressive', I will be making my first appointment at the Indy. Monday, I will schedule it. Still baffling while they recommend every 60k but push it at 40k.

I guess, if I don't notice a damn thing, after getting new plugs . .I have my answer haha.

Garage List
Per the Owner’s Manual: “Replace spark plugs at every 6th Engine Oil Service (approximately 60,000; all models except diesels).”

The dealer recommended I have the plugs replaced at my 6th oil change, according to the book. I had just over 50k miles on it. I did it myself.

I’m guessing you’re right in assuming your replacement interval is tied to the MPPSK.

Just because you might not notice anything tangible when you change them doesn't mean you shouldn't have done it. The whole point of preventative maintenance is to do things BEFORE they are causing a problem. If you replace your plugs and immediately notice a difference, you already waited too long.

Its because your car is due for its 6th oil change. I got pinged by my dealer last week as well. According to the BMW service, it's 6 oil changes or 96k km / 60k miles. As much as that is "preventative maintenance", you really need to swap your plugs every 6 years, regardless of mileage? Do they really rot in there? First time I've ever seen such a thing.

My car is at it's 6th oil change and 55k km / 35k miles. And no, not changing them....

I have done some reading and have decided to move forward and get the spark plugs replaced. With the (mild) MPPSK tune and my oddly aggressive driving habits, my plugs should probably get changed out every 40k miles. With a more intense tune, every 25k miles. Not saying this is FACT, but that's the feeling I get from digging around online.

Oddly enough, the Dealer wins this one. We have a great Indy that only works on BMWs out here. Has a great reputation. But, I was a bit disappointed that their quote was almost $200 more than the dealer for my needs.

Oil Change at Dealer: $99
Oil Change at Indy: $124
Spark Plugs at Dealer: $323
Spark Plugs at Indy: $512

Dealer has some good pricing under "Value Services" tab. We have two BMW dealers here, and only one is offering the value pricing on spark plugs. So, might as well save myself $200 now, rather than wait for 60k miles and pay $200 more, if that pricing has ended.

On to the next one . . .

I just have a regular 14mm spark plug socket with the rubber inside which worked great for extraction but for insertion, I taped the socket to the extender.

The B58 spark plug uses a 16mm? Thought most if not all BMW spark plugs use 14mm.

14mm 12point is correct for NGK 94201

Might want to check the part #s on your plugs. Multiple sources including NGK say 14mm double hex.

I'm sure here spark plugs are changed every second service. So every 4 years.

14mm thin wall socket is the correct size. Here’s the one I bought that fit properly.
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/14m...nsion-cta-7654

Also, a bracket at the rear of the engine compartment must be removed to access the rear spark plugs. It’s not hard if you follow the procedure. Here’s one from YouTube.

I'm changing mine this weekend, got all the tools and torque wrench, along with the NGKs. People say not to change coils as those should be good for a while, So I'm going that route. Dealer wanted close to 1k for ignition service but that may have included coil packs… it has to for that much.

I scheduled my Spark Plug service at one of the local BMW dealers here. Shockingly (even to them lol), they had the best price.

BMW dealer sites have a 'value service' link on the menu. You put in your year and model and it tells you what value services are available to you.

Dealer 1: Offered Value Spark Plugs $323, and Value Oil $99. Plus ten other values.

Dealer 2: Only offered Value Oil $99. None of the others.

Seeing as I have already been to Dealer 2, I called them to see if they would price match the Value Spark Plug Service. They would not. He said "We are not participating in that sale". No worries . . .

I called Dealer1 and they told me I was incorrect. $323 was not the price for me . It was $575! I said "okay. Please help me understand the difference between the $323 option you are advertising online, and the $575 version? What is the exact difference in those?" He said he would call me back haha. Then when they called back, the will honor the price. Great.

Then, I called the local Indy shop (great reputation and I really want to start going there . . ), but they quoted $124 for the oil change and $512 for the spark plugs. Shockingly, they where higher on both options.

Seeing as I don't have tools, and live in an apartment where it's not allowed to do work on our car in the lot . . . $323 was a pretty good price. She is scheduled for next Wednesday.

$323 is actually not bad for that work. Good luck!
