Dealerships tend to make stuff up. Some service advisers simply do not know much about cars and will B.S. their explanations with what little they know. A common point of failure with early F30 cars seems to be the belt in the steering rack. If you go online, there are a lot of aftermarket sales of power steering belts online, usually that means that's a common problem. Dealerships aren't certified to change those out though, they have to switch out the entire rack.
