My F31 story

Hi everyone, new to the forums here. Been a car guy for a long time, used to be a technician for MB up until a few years ago.

I bought a 2015 Orion Silver F31 with black dakota leather interior this July.
Had 36k miles, the HK sound system, cold weather package (I live in Alaska), and lighting package. Love the car! Unfortunately, after driving a bit over a thousand miles, the engine suddenly and abruptly seized on a trip down the Kenai Peninsula to Homer. The dealer didn't investigate any further after finding chunks of metal in the oil filter housing and oil pan. Luckily, everything was covered by the dealer. Been doing some research and found that some N20's have timing chain/oil pump issues. I guess I'll never know what plagued my first engine, but I'm glad I have a new one with warranty.

So far I've installed M sport pedals (replicas), a red start/stop button, blacked out sport grille, and have CF mirror caps and roof spoiler on order. I've been looking into upgrading the iDrive (no nav) with Eonon or whatever the brand is called.

This is my 3rd BMW and 6th car. My other car is a 2008 Saab 9-3. My first two BMW's were an e38 and e46.

Welcome to the F31 community. There's been a lot of discussions on the timing chain issue, but most failures seem to be much higher mileage.

Thanks! Yeah, that's what I've been reading! It's kind of disappointing, but hopefully I won't have to deal with that again! They also changed the transmission fluid. I'm not sure if I'm going to get any tunes done, but I definitely would like the exhaust to be a little louder. Sort of like the Mini Cooper S. Maybe I'll remove the resonator and see how much of a difference that makes.

Welcome and it's a pretty rare occurrence if I run into another Orion Silver Metallic F31. Mine has everything except the light package. Mine is the Luxury line and tan leather. Here's mine.

Nice one! I'll be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of the color at first, but it's grown on me. I love the car, and I'm happy to be in another wagon.

I call it "that white gold" because who can make a gold paint color and call it silver? Germans, that's who. I've only seen one other Bimmer this color near where I live and only one other F31 at all.

Congrats and welcome! Love the F31's, if they'd put a B58 in it and sold them in North America I would buy it in a second!

Hopefully no more major engine problems from here on. My service manager at Anchorage BMW (I used to work with him) told me they haven't seen any issues with the N20s here. But that there's some kind of lawsuit and issue with the V8s that they're seeing more and more of. I guess it was just my luck.

I get my CF mirror caps tomorrow, and seems like I'll have to wait until early next month for my spoiler. Waxed the car the other day and went on a nice drive today.

Your car’s a beauty! The color looks perfect to me, and matches the spectacular scenery. It resembles the desert silver of my 2001 MB W210. Too bad about the blown engine. Could the frigid temperatures have contributed to embrittlement of internal plastic components, such as maybe the timing chain guide?

Thanks! They didn't investigate to see if it was the timing chain that failed. They just found metal in the oil filter housing, and oil pan. They decided to replace the engine with those findings. I didn't hear any whining or out of the ordinary sounds. The only indicator of an issue that day was after WOT as I overtook someone. The engine had a bit of a shudder, then it smoothed out again and ran fine for another several miles. Then I felt a jerk, heard a squeal, and the car stalled and went into neutral. Wouldn't turn over, and at that point I figured it had seized. I could hear the starter trying to engage, just a buzzing noise.
