BMW matching numbers - how to check?

Hi

How do I check if a car is matching numbers - original engine in the car? Is the engine number somewhere to be found in the cars documentation? (at work and too impatient to check when I get home)

I don't think it's possible. I had my engine replaced and looking into the Carly Car Check nothing comes up as a replaced engine. In my case the onboard computer regards the engine replacement as an oil change.

Of course. The computer cannot read the different number on the engine block

don't cars usually have a serial # stamped on the engine block? not sure of its exact location on the n55, but you definitley need to get under the hood.

Engine serial # is on the engine of course. But how to know if it is the original engine in the car? That is my question.

There is not software to detect that change. You changed hardware/mechanical items not anything electrical per say (for example new idrive will carry a new serial number... but say if a BMW shop replaces a valve cover, youll never know unless you check the valve cover itself). Similarly during an engine swap most/if not all electrical parts are reused and only the mechanical engine long/short block is replaced.

In short youd have to find the VIN imprinted on the block to verify.

BMW AG certainly has an internal record for a variety of business reasons (ex, recalls). They may or may not share that information with you.
