N55 EWG rattle?

Question: Do you have waste gate rattle?

I am looking at what appears to be waste gate rattle at low boost (1-3lbs), that just cropped up about a month ago. I am a N55 F32, with 65k miles.

Talked to my shop.. they *think* its waste gate. Talked to Seattle BMW shop foreman.. "oh yeah.. absolutely N55s have waste gate rattle like the N54s did, EWG hasn't changed that."

Anyone else experiencing this? Honestly its driving me a little crazy, and apparently the only "fix" is a new turbo has its an integrated piece. I would go Pure2 for sure if I did, but just irritating.

Anyone else experiencing N55 EWG rattle?

Thanks

With my valved straightpipe exhaust I can definetely hear wastegate rattle. It's pretty noticeable until it is fully warmed up then goes away mostly. And I can only hear it in comfort mode between 1000rpm and 2300ish when the valve opens. It goes away 100% in sport mode. I asked the mechanic what it was when I had it on a lift and he did a thorough check of the entire exhaust and said it's pretty much guaranteed wastegate rattle

Yeah.. I get a metal on metal ticking sound from about 1.2 - 2.6lbs of boost, not below, not above. Its quiet but especially since it just started, its driving me a little crazy.

The rattle can be tuned out in a custom tune with making changes to the WGDC / throttle target tables.

For example, you should notice that the rattle is less audible or nearly non existent in Sport+ mode when compared to the same throttle position in Comfort mode.

I will definitely check on that thank you.. I will check modes, but I think it was or is consistent throughout modes.

I have definitely noticed it in different modes. Sport/Sport+ it is virtually nonexistent. I can only really notice it in comfort mode before being full warmed up

Also have this. When I was under the car the other weekend I noticed that between the wastegate actuator and the arm of the wastegate itself is a small piece that connects the two. There's quite a bit of play in those attachments. I wonder if adding a spacer between the circlips and arms would prevent the rattle?

I have this rattle regardless of mode for me, though I am in sport or sport+ 99% of the time.

Great choice...as you know. But, consider SpeedTech S3 to REALLY take advantage of your XDI HPFP

I would try an ISTA wastegate calibration before tossing parts at the situation. You can also remove the downpipe and check for play in the wastegate.

can you take a pic or diagram if what you are looking at here? Happy to check that myself.

Thank you.. if that is a source of vibration, wonder if there is a way to eliminate that?

I just went through this same issue!(rattling at around 2k rpm) After a lot of searching I ended up buying a replacement for the clamp that connects the downpipe to the midpipe. The metal part that goes inside the clamp can get disfigured during exhaust / downpipe installs and is supposed to be single use. Part no. 18307620349. Other exhaust rattles/vibrations can usually be fixed by readjusting your exhaust to make sure its not touching anything.
