My dad helped dig people out of the rubble. My school pals lost parents. It was a couple of weeks after my 9th birthday and I can still remember it vividly. No-one was ever held properly to account.

In other "isn't life great in the 50's/60's" news we had smallpox, scarlet fever, measles, thalidomide, Suez, Korea, rickets, everyone smoked, no seatbelts.

Rose-tinted testicles indeed.
The 21st of October is a tricky day. The Aberfan disaster took place on that day in 1966. I recall us writing sympathy cards at my infants/junior school.

I remember that day. We never had TV in the home at that time. Was glued to the radio, listening to the coverage "on the news". Seeing pictures in the new papers was quite disturbing.

Watched a documentary a little while back, where some survivors recalled the whole period, along with old newsreel and interviews at the time. Still has a major impact on the community.

I've still got the rationing coupons somewhere that I got issued for my Ford Zephyr (reg HYM442C) at the time.

Errrmmm, no.

Try multiply by 9, divide by 5, add 32.

I have memorized certain conversions because they give non-fractional answers and are noteworthy for other reasons.

5°C = 41°F (chilly for me after all these years in the desert)
20°C = 68°F (nice warm day in England, here I need a sweater if the wind is blowing)
25°C = 77°F (scorpions get active, break out the black light and Raid)
30°C = 86°F (just warm enough in Vegas, sweaty in Alabama. Don't forget your car sunshades)
35°C = 95°F (nice in the shade with low humidity in Vegas, getting nasty anywhere else)
40°C = 104°F (getting a bit toasty now, even for me. Girl at work from Yuma finally seen without a sweater)
45°C = 113°F (makes you wonder when you're on a fully loaded 747-400 about to take off)
47°C = 117°F (hottest it's ever been officially in Vegas, and it's ugly)

Was that 117F Vegas temps this summer? We flew in to Vegas in early July and then did a tour of state parks in Utah and Arizona including the Grand Canyon and then went back for a few days to catch a cool Vegas show and then flew back home. It was hot and I can't remember if it was 117 but it was pretty close. Anyway, just wondering if that was when we were there? Cheers.
