Internal bicycle rack for BMW F31 series 3 touring estate wagon etc.
I'm deciding between buying a 3 series F31 and a 5 series F11 and I would like to carry bikes in the car. I'm searching for internal bike rack options for carrying a bike standing vertically inside an F31 touring estate wagon. I found an official BMW internal rack for the 5 series F11 and was wondering if anything similar exists for the F31? Is anybody carrying bikes vertically inside their F31?
I'd like to carry a large road bike (56 size frame), and sometimes a 29er cross country mountain bike. Most likely the the front wheel and possibly seatpost needs to be taken off the bike and rear seats need to be folded down for a fit like this. Bikes on the official BMW internal rack in a 5 series F11: The rack itself: There is a DIY method on youtube in an F31, with the bike facing the other direction to the front of the car, and the forkholder attached to the back of the folded seat: https://youtu.be/zHOARMFMU9c Does anybody carry their bikes this way in an F31? Can you post some photos? I'm especially interested if larger mountain bikes would fit this way? Do you need to use the additional space/height by opening the doors on the bottom of the trunk? Thanks! |

No experience here but I frequently carry a bike just laying flat.
What you're suggesting just doesnt seem to offer much benefit IMO having to remove both the seatpost and wheel. I started using a roof rack after making a mess of the interior after wet, snow, mud rides |

I have a hitch on my F31 and it is a perfect solution for my road, mtb and gravel bikes. As previoulsy mentioned, removing front wheel and seat/post to stand vertically doesn't make any sense to me FWIW.

I use my fork-mount roof rack multiple times weekly for my road, gravel, xc and full-squish bikes. Given my full-squish has a dropper post, not as easy to remove the seatpost if I wanted to transport inside the vehicle. Additionally, the interior of my F31 would be covered in dust/sand/mud. I would never use this as there's no benefit whatsoever except for being able to lock the bike inside the car.

I'd agree. Carbon is not meant for constant removal or adjustment. It's durable for sure but I most certainly would not pull my seat multiple times per week, def not worth it, maybe for longer trips on occasion. I'll stick to pulling the front wheel and folding the seats. Really cool concept though
