Suspension Warranty Claim
I was getting new non-runflat tires installed yesterday at a local tire center and they noticed that the front right strut was blown and leaking when they were remounting the front right wheel. I am running the OEM 18 inch 400m wheels and the car has the Adaptive M Sport suspension. Does anyone know or have any experience if this will be covered under warranty by BMW NA?
I still have 3 months left on the original 4 year/50k mile warranty and another year of CPO warranty after that. The car only has 34.5k miles and has not been driven much recently due to working from home. I have read a lot of old threads on here about suspension and warranty coverage but most of them relate to damage from aftermarket upgrades or coverage in other countries. Thanks in advance for any help. Last edited by rooosh798; 01-13-2021 at 08:32 PM.. |

Yea I already booked the earliest available appointment but I will try to see if I can walk in and force them to look at it ASAP. Just worried that they will pull the "suspension is a wear and tear item and not covered" card on me.

Correct, but your relationship with your SA or the dealership helps too. I'm on CPO coverage now and I've had excluded items covered...with no deductible. That's why I make a point of buying my oil there for DIY oil changes even though I can get it cheaper elsewhere, and I always swing by and say hello to the service guys. I want to be memorable.

Interestingly, the dealer staff who was booking the appointment for me claimed that "it is impossible for struts to leak unless you hit a big pothole so it wont be covered by warranty". Doesn't fill me with confidence that dealer staff are making arbitrary statements without proof about denying coverage even under the new car warranty lol. Hopefully, my service advisor who has done other warranty work on my car can sort this out quickly and efficiently. |

Normally, 37K miles would not be sufficient to cause that failure. This is a CPO, so the unknown part is what the previous driver may have done/hit that may have accelerated the failure. (See you are in NJ- Was the previous owner also in NJ? Pothole Heaven!). Hopefully, the Service manager is a " Customer-Friendly" guy who would like to build is service base and lean in your direction. If they are not willing to replace at "no cost", maybe able to to get a reduced cost offset. Let us know how it goes.

I have also had no issues with the service advisor previously when my driver's side DRL in my adaptive headlights turned yellow they replaced the whole headlight under the factory warranty no questions asked. Have had the car for service with them previously as well. Last edited by rooosh798; 01-14-2021 at 06:19 PM.. |

Interesting that is "failed" during those 6-7 k miles you had it and it passed CPO inspection at 31k miles. Assuming no abuse, it may well be a faulty part. It does happen- even to BMW

I had my rear shocks fail at 40k while under cpo and had it covered under goodwill. Similar experience that I am blown away that they failed so quick

I had my front adaptive struts replaced under warranty at 49k. Seems to be more common than you would think with these cars. I've been less than impressed with the quality of many aspects of the F30. Seems like there were some corners cut in multiple areas during the development of this chassis. Especially in regards to the suspension... personal opinion of course.

F30 335i front struts
[QUOTE=...but mentioned that all other components looked good, no bent rims, cracked strut mounts or leaky bushings to indicate any road/pothole damage.[/QUOTE]
Hi all - first time on here. Looking to get into a 2013 335i xDrive w/ 49k miles - being sold by a BMW dealership. On the note of front struts... this vehicle just had its front struts replaced (1/19/21). Is there any way to determine if this was a result of a faulty part or an abused car/potholes? In addition to looking at bent rims, strut mounts or leaky bushings. Would a dealer give me an honest answer if I were to ask? What hesitations would you all have? I can't get a warranty so I'm trying to be as careful as I can. I attached the carfax here. https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistor...3B9G57DNR90261 Thank you! |

Suspension Warranty Claim
I would just ask them first and see what they say also ask if every corner was replaced and if they have the work order for the work. Even though a dealer is selling the vehicle, I would get a trusted Euro/BMW Indy mechanic to look at the vehicle on a lift. The nominal fee an Indy mechanic may charge to inspect is worth it just for the piece of mind. If issues are found you can either negotiate the price down or get the dealer to fix the items at no charge. Also test drive the car, preferably in silence and over some uneven roads so you can pick out any clunks or rattles easily. The F30 bottoms out and makes a horrible explosive noise if the struts are bad on any side. Also does the car have adaptive m sport suspension option or standard suspension? Part costs for the standard suspension are like 50-70% lower than the adaptive. The adaptive shocks from aftermarket companies are basically the same price as OEM which is roughly around $600 per strut for the fronts and $400ish per side on the rear. If the car is on adaptive m suspension I would personally stay away, its too expensive to fix if you find issues after purchase. The standard suspension parts are way cheaper.

335i
Thanks for the input. It is the standard suspension. I drove the car and it felt pretty good. That N55 still pulls hard and it handled pretty well. I used to drive a 435i so naturally it wasn't as tight but still good. Waiting on the dealer to tell me the reasoning for the front strut replacement. Depending on this answer I'll pull the trigger. Thanks again.
