Long time lurker, I registered to say great job. Looking forward to the finalized How-To.

Would it be possible to buy the male and female ends of the harness and create an adapter that would allow for complete adaption/removal? Similar to A4 xeon retrofit via Kufatec adapter?

Thanks. I cannot see how an adapter will work except for just eliminating moving the one wire and adding the grounds at the headlight level which is really not that hard to do. You will still have to move the wires at the FEM module in order for the lights to work.

That being said, I just added the steps for wiring the FEM module now. I will try and work on the DIY more later, but I need to do some work for now. Feel free to comment about the progress and ask questions for the sections I already completed.

Hello,

I retrofited xenon (wo ahl 522) on my 320i, I study the wiring, and i am totally okay with the first topic

I ordered sensor for levering LWR, not yet installed.

I did the coding $522 with e-sys, and xenon works fine, bi-xenon shutter okay.

There is a but, i did a look with Inpa for errors :

Code:

I do not wired sensor in ICM, so, i think the error should go off afeter installing levering sensor.

but this error :
0xD90D16 operating unit light (BEL ), ( LIN): wrong version installed

This error is very strange, I hope that we do need to change FEM in order to make xenon working correctly !

What i do, i updated FEM with 50.4 data, i see all paramter about LWR, AHL... but the error still there.

FYI, i correctly swap wires on FEM for pin 8 ( lin ******ion).

I need to clear the error, thanks in advanced!
With E-SYS, select AHL_TYP = ohne in module FEM.

Hey guys, I just added in the front level sensor install. I still have to finish the headlight removal and install (waiting on more pictures) and the rear level sensor install. Other than that just some touching up and should be complete. I will try and do a little each day.

Is everyone finding this helpful? Please feel free to ask questions and make suggestions.

Once it is complete I will start a new thread as I cannot edit the OP's first post to add the DIY to there.

I find it really helpful and am using it to prepare for my own retrofit.

I'd request you add what needs to be coded though. I'm not asking how to code, but at least what needs to be added, FDL coded...etc.

And thanks for the document. Can't wait for the complete guide

I already did the coding section. . Maybe you didn't see it yet? Or do you think I'm missing something?

Did you mean LWL_AHL_TYP? There's no AHL_TYP in FEM. Also, it looks like setting C_BLC_ENA = F030disable is more appropriate.

@kapkanimd, what does the auto-leveler do? Is it for the vertical orientation/adjustment? You mentioned cornering works in your document. Does this mean the lamp adjust constantly in relation to the road/steering position?

correct, the auto level sensors only adjusts vertical orientation. The headlights already 'adaptive' i.e. move with the steering wheel. The slightest movement of the steering wheel adjusts moves the headlights. They also widen when you go below 25mph and tighten at highway speeds.

Corrected the part number, thanks F30EDR. Also I just added installing the rear sensor. I didn't finish the wiring yet, but will do so when I can. Other than that, it shouldn't be too long till finished.

I retrofited the front sensor:

Now, missing rear sensor, to be connected to ICM.

For your information, you can use harness from E90 headlight xenon post equipement, it is the same pin out and color wiring ! just need to remove some wire not required for F30 (ground and bi xenon remote).

Everything is now complete except for the headlight removal and reinstall. I am still waiting on a few more pictures and I will update when I can. Other than that I finished the auto level install. Enjoy.

Again, let me know if there are any questions or clarification needed or if you need the pictures enlarged or more pictures.

Did you get the levelers working?

All the parts I've ordered are coming in tomorrow. Controllers are ridiculously expensive and I still can't believe I shelled out that much for 2 pieces of circuit boards. I'm out $1200, excluding the housing. A little bit over 2 grand for everything. I'm sure it will be worth it once installed and I see it working.

I haven't had a free second to work on it... one day I will...

seems like you didn't want to be patient... I got the circuit boards for about $165 each... you will definitely appreciate them though once they are in

did you order just the headlights or the leveling sensors as well?

That is a good price. I paid $295 a pop and I thought that was a good price already, considering they go for $375 elsewhere. I just got tired of waiting for them to show up in eBay after 2 weeks of everyday checking.

I'm doing just the headlights for now, I may add the leveling sensors later.

Yeah waiting is not fun, it took me months to gather the parts..

Sounds good, and good luck. I was trying to make a sticky for my DIY as it applies to US spec only cars (for the most part) and keep it a little separate and cleaner than this thread which is also a great reference.

If you complete it or have any questions that will be of benefit for the DIY please post in this thread:

http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=938803

Also, if you could, please take pictures of the headlights after the bumper is removed to show locations of bottom screws and path to remove them. I just forgot and it would help make the DIY a little more complete.

I'll keep this in mind.

I'm debating whether to start the retrofit in 2 weeks or wait till after I bring my car in for service early March. I want them to update the software and don't want anything interfering with that.

I did the installation of the two levels sensor wired to the ICM, no more error from ICM, we can monitor value with INPA.

Now, i have error from the FEM, , FEM cannot give the correct position of the headlight, it seems that it is an issue with the LIN.. i do not undestand, i correctly wired the LIN bus to the FEM: i will check again the wiring !

I tryed to calibrate sensor with inpa, but calibration failed due to bad value from FEM...

So maybe my headlight module are defect...
