The issue is how 3D buildings on the map are handled. You need a later iStep version than originally came with pre 2014 cars.

So if you have that update or you live in an area with no 3D buildings, you are fine.

I had drive out of London to get my sat nav to load properly to then downgrade back to an older set of maps. On my other NBT car the 2019-1 loaded just fine but the nav is from a 2016 car.

BMW have been utterly useless and had to solve this without their help. Will be contacting customer services when I am back from holiday.

Just checked the 3D buildings issue on my 2012 car and it’s working fine with 2019-1 maps. Have a feeling that my software was updated by BMW about 4 years ago whilst under warranty because I was having problems with iDrive.

Is there a way to check what iStep version I have.

I installed from BMW the 2019-1 and updated fine.
Im not in a city centre so no 3D buildings but I do have the odd 3D image (bridge).

The only warranty work I had was a new auto gear selector which needs coding.
Unsure if idrive would be updated for this.

I've never had OTA, despite many calls to ConnectedDrive who always tell me that I have the option booked but it has to be a signal thing. The car is 14 months old, I cannot believe I have never been anywhere which a decent 3G signal 🧐

Is there a simple way to get a newer update or is it a case of waiting till your chosen ?

It seems bizarre that some are on 2019-1, others are on 2018-4, yet we’re still on 2018-1.

For those of you saying you’re stuck on 2018-1, I’m on a subscription and in the same boat. I emailed ConnectedDrive about it asking them to explain how it works and got the following (waste of time) response.

Many thanks for your email about the USB Map Updates for your BMW 3 Series, I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with this service.

When the new update is available specifically for your vehicle, it will appear on your account for you to download. There are various factors that play a part in determining availability such as: Device Type, HMI Version, PU Step, and Country/Region in addition to the map version provided to BMW by the supplier.

As there are so many factors involved the team that develops and releases the various versions of Map Update are never able to provide us with an accurate timeframe for the release of the newest map versions. I can tell you that it differs in how many updates you receive in a year but normally you can possibly receive up to 1 to 4 updates in a year – But please be assured that this update will be available for you to download for your vehicle in time.

I hope this was helpful, if there's anything else I can you with, then please do let me know.

Is there an easy way to check what map is available, whether its on the BMW ConnectedDrive webpage or iphone app. I always have to go the download manager and attempt a download for it to tell me what map is available or i have the current map available. Surely there must be an easier way ?

As someone who doesn’t turn on the home PC very often, this is a pain to be the only way to find out.

...and it gets more annoying. Every time it tells me that the map I already have is the latest available it sends me an email with an installation code for the map that I didn't download.
