Cold start rattle (also REMUS Exhaust video)
update on https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...8&postcount=22
----------- Hey guys, i wanted to show you a video of my new remus exhaust on my 328. But at the same time, maybe you could help me. Mostly when the car is cold and i turn it on, i hear this rattle for a while... maybe you have an idea of what it could be? You can barely notice it if you watch the video on a phone, sounds better on desktop speakers The rattle starts at 0:06 and at 0:19 you can notice how it fades out Ive had it for a long time already before i installed the exhaust. Sounds really good! Not sure what the rattle could be but sounds like it's coming from up front, maybe try and get a video from under the hood? Could just be the normal injector noise from what it sounds like in that video.

Exhaust sounds great, I cant hear any rattle, maybe you should move the mic away from exhaust outlets and more towards the center of car (closer to possible source of rattle).

I think it has to do with the warm up procedure the engine goes through, not to worry, mine does it too.

To be specific the rattle is most likely the actuator on your turbo. Over time it weathers, rusts and starts to rattle.
Its normal, although if you have warranty still you may be able to have it replaced. I had my entire turbo replaced on warranty for the same problem. My cars quiet as a whistle now.

My exhaust was rattling pretty bad and it went away after upgrading the entire exhaust. I did not touch the turbo actuator (wastegate?). I am assuming my rattle was either the factory down pipe to catback clamp or the muffler flap, but I haven't heard it since upgrading the downpipe/frontpipe/muffler....

update: noise seems to come from under the car, not from the engine

Exhaust flap? I would think it would be heard more clearly in the video if that was it but worth checking. Other than, I would make sure all the screws for all the exhaust clamps from the DP to the muffler are secure.

Didn't know Remus wasn't valved, my bad! Also didn't pay attention to your mention of it happening stock, my bad 2! In that case, I would refer to the last part of my post, making sure that every clamp and it's fasteners are secured well.

Hopefully it gets sorted when the mechanic gets a chance to look at it.

I have 320i so I don't have exhaust flap either. Car is stock but of course there might be some clamp in the exhaust that has got loose. |

I was up on the lift stepping on the pedal every time he told me to do so, he kept checking that everything was fine. It seems it a piece of ceramic (or whatever material is used on this car model) loose inside the cat, he told me theres nothing to worry about. The options are: 1) tiny chance that it goes away on its own some day 2) waste money on a new cat 3) live with it so i guess ill have to ignore it Last edited by mallorca328; 11-21-2018 at 07:07 AM.. |

For some reason its slightly "damaged" on the inside. Its still not an issue and shouldnt give problems in a long time, i mean i can just leave it like that. The problem is they dont sell JUST this part, only the whole cat (at least OEM) so the only way to get rid of the noise would be going catless or replacing the cat.
