CP and IC Install Wed. 7/25

Hey guys -

So I'm having my VRSF CP and AA IC installed this coming Wednesday. The dealer quoted me 2.5 - 3 hrs. for the labor. This seems fair to me, what do you guys think?

That sounds about right. When you say dealer, are you talking about an Indy, or an actual BMW Dealership?

Actual dealership, I'm cool with the SA and they don't destroy me on the hourly.

That's cool! Are you still warrantied? Curious how your SA is treating it...

Intercooler install is straightforward, since it just drops right out from underneath the car.

Charge pipe takes some wiggling, but should be 1-1.5hrs from a dealer...

They're cool with aftermarket parts, they just don't warranty them. They do however warranty the work though.

Sorry I didn't completely answer your question, yes I'm CPO'ed until 2020.

Which dealer did you go with, if you don't mind me asking? I have a few parts that I need to install, and not sure if I want to take on all the work myself.

Seems fair from a dealer standpoint.

You could have done it yourself though, I promise.

If you have a garage, do not pay a dealer for simple installs. Take a Saturday and bang it out - not difficult!

From a "book time" rate that's probably about right. For a practical time rate it'll probably get done in under 2hrs (if they're adding time for full vehicle inspection that might bump things up a bit).

At the track this weekend I swapped my IC in under 30min at the end of the first day (hopped off the track at 4:58PM, did a download with my coach, drove to the paddock, put the car up, and lowered it by 5:32PM). I already had my quickjack lift in place since I had the car up in the morning to swap the brake pads.

Good stuff! Unfortunately I don't have access to a lift and I don't feel comfortable putting the car on jack stands to swap the hardware. I think 2.5 hours is fair, plus if I have an issue I can just bring it right back to them. Did you notice any gains in power at all?

I was swapping between the ATM IC and Wagner EVO 2 Comp since I was comparing them at the track. There's no perceptible difference in power between them, but my preliminary data shows that the ATM IC is consistently about 8-10F cooler than the Wagner (will have a more comprehensive report in my log with graphs/plots).

OP - how did things turn out now that your install is done? Did you make sure to tighten the bung plug on the CP?

Yep all good. Car seems more responsive on throttle and pulls harder towards the top of RPM range. Very happy so far. No issues, fingers crossed.

I would have paid for the 2.5h labor as well. Not a bad price when you don't have to do it yourself. All comes down to what you value your time at. Sometimes throwing money at the problem is worth it. I may cough up for a spring install just because I don't want to dedicate a half day plus to it myself.

After 10 days with my new CP, all is good so far. I've pushed it hard several times with no ill effects. I really think the aluminum CP promotes better airflow into the TB as well as being stronger.

I've been researching intercooler upgrades for the N55 so I am very curious about your test results. My understanding is that the ATM is a bar & plate design while the Wagner Competition2 is a tube & fin design. I have the impression that the Wagner should have better heat recovery during repeated pulls and, maybe, less pressure drop. Curious what your findings are?

Replied to in my Intercooler Shootout thread. It has all the results/graphs from the weekend's test, and will have the results from my "everyday driving" test/comparison.
