+1. I have driven manual, currently drive auto by circumstances, but can't wait to get back to manual - despite the drop in MPG.

Would an 8 speed manual produce better mpg?

Correct.... not much fun factor in a seven speed manual gearbox...or 8... do I hear 9.. maybe 11 speed? Lexus has to have one coming.. It probably would... but then you would have to go to a double tree setup like the big rigs.. Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 01-26-2012 at 09:34 PM.. |

To the guys driving manuals...do you do much stop and go/city driving? If so, doesn't the constant shifting get annoying? I have an hour long commute and half of it is stop and go. Maybe it would help keep me awake to have a manual but it seems like it would be a real hassle at times.

EPA always seem underrated to me On my 335i with MT and N54 i was easily getting 32-34 highway (EPA 26) On X6M it's 20-23 (EPA 17) |

Unfortunately the writing is on the wall...the end is near for manual trans .
I hope BMW will still make them for the manual enthusiast. |

**Plus or minus 10mpg
also, I’m sure these MPG are for the...conservative, non-modding, tea and crumpet crowd!

on my 07 335 MT i squiezed out 38 MPG once from santa barbara to san diego. avg 37 on computer and with good old math at the pump got 38.3
its sad to see the manuals being surpased in performance and fuel economy

I'm pretty sure that if one drives aggressively, s/he'll burn just about the same gas mileage whether it's manual or auto.
All these gas mileage numbers seem pretty good, but it's resulted from grandma driving style for sure. I cant wait to hear the true story of gas mileage from these new turbo's cars. Cuz My Euro 325i 2.5L engine drinks 12.5mpg consistently, 100% city driving & in semi-manual mode.

It makes sense that the 8gear auto has better fuel milleage than the manual.
I drive a 120d as a second drive, and after doing a business trip ~500km with half the trip doing 190km/h on the highway the clock showed 6.1 L / 100km |

According to sources there will be new 4 cylinder and a new 6 coming as well. The X3 will be announced with a diesel as will the X1 (4 cylinder with Countryman reportedly ) As for EPA- whatever mode the car starts in (default=comfort) is what is used for testing. ECO Pro will yield even better numbers- I have seen upwards of 2 mpg when I use it to it's optimum. More to come soon- Porsche is also going tri-turbo like BMW so FI is going to get even more interesting.

2012 F30 335i 8-speed auto: 23 city /33 highway.
Pretty much the same as my previous 2 litre, 4 cyl Golf 5 GTI (manual). Impressive indeed. And FAR superior to my N54 |
