Manual tranny guys - Rev-match/Double clutch poll
Hey as the poll states, want to know what the manual tranny guys here do. Call me old school but 13 years ago I taught myself to double clutch, heel-toe shift in my Accord and haven't stopped in my Z4, E92 and now F32. I think i'm one of the few people to double-clutch vs rev match...yes I get it, we have syncros and that's what they are there for. I always thought that I needed to save my syncros by double-clutching...so never switched to rev-match.
So what do you do? |

You must win all the drag races... lol jk
I double-clutch once in a while but just to practice it. In daily driving I almost never do it. I don't think transmission life is something to be worried about. The synchros will last the life of the car. That said, if you're good with double-clutching, that's pretty impressive. When driving casually, ideally everyone would double-clutch. |

wait. i want to be clear about this. you're telling me that in the course of normal driving, every time you go shift to another gear, you put the shifter in neutral, let the clutch out, and then put the clutch back in and shift in to the next (up or down) gear? because that's what double clutching is. and it's not "ideal", it's not being old school. it's ridiculous. you aren't driving a tractor trailor. just drive your car.
is rev matching a good idea? yes, it's a good idea to rev match. it smooths out the ride for your passengers and puts less wear on your clutch, but are you heal-toe downshifting everywhere? do you double-clutch while you heal-toe?

Yes this is a serious question and I should have clarified, only on downshifts. Definitely not on upshifts...hence why everyone is quoting FnF!

I drove 18 Speed trucks back in the day, with no synchros in them. And even then, I rarely double clutched, because floating the gears was MUCH more efficient. And I rarely ever drove the same vehicle back to back. the wide range of vehicles I operated meant I became VERY proficient in driving anything, yes, even things without wheels. You are saving zero wear and tear on your vehicle. I would venture to say that dang near 100% of manual cars never have the synchros swapped out. |

People would actually double-clutch a BMW? Why?
My 340 is an 8 spd auto, but I have had lots of manual tranny BMWs, and I would rev-match on down-shifts. Double-clutching is for 3 ton grain trucks in the 1950s.

Rev matching is something I do on occasion but double clutching an F30? Why?

+1 to pretty much all the above replies... I'm 52 and still too young to even bother asking what double clutching is because (from reading above what it is) it sounds to me like it's totally irrelevant in a modern car.
Now rev matching... sure I always did that until I got a car that does it for me! |

Lol I just wanted a poll...and I know I'm definitely the odd duck out there, hence why I set it up. Deep down I know I'm not right.
Here's why I learned to double clutch - when I got my first manual car back in early 2000's, I really wanted to drive it 'properly'. I drove stick occasionally on a 240sx for years, but just regular shifting. Why I chose double clutching was based on the information I researched back then. I really wanted to learn heel-toe downshifting on turns and it was explained using both ways, rev-matching and double clutching. My understanding was that double-clutching (edit: with a rev-match to be extra clear) would save your syncros, which apparently is not an issue these days. However, one other reason why I learned double clutching was that during the larger downshifts (e.g. 5th to 3rd or 2nd) that would go a few thousand RPMs, it was better to double clutch. By blipping the throttle in neutral, you're matching your engine speed to the wheels which does put less strain on your syncros. As I figured I would be downshifting a few gears for those quick accelerations, double-clutching was the way to go. It stuck for heel-toe on turns and then just for downshifts on highways and just regular streets. And it stuck for day to day driving. Needless to say, I'm very good at it...and it's a skill which apparently is pointless. I just need to unlearn it and go straight to rev-matching. Last edited by silver28; 08-21-2017 at 09:00 PM.. |

When I was first driving one of our vehicles had a crash box. Absolutely necessary to perfect the skill of double declutching along with rev matching. Of recent years only when driving light HGV and plant has double declutching been necessary. Rev matching has always been part of good driving practice, whatever the MT. I'm surprised it even has to be questioned. |

Don't feel bad OP, I used to double-clutch and heel-toe with my first car, an '89 Probe. It wasn't necessary but neither was a manual transmission. It was just part of the fun and something to keep me entertained/busy while driving.
BTW I've seen several posts about 2nd gear synchros going bad in F3x's. Not that anyone should double-clutch in order to prevent that from happening, but it does happen. |

Funny, was super conscious when I drove to the train station this morning for work, never downshifted once in the 15 minute drive. Only went into neutral for red lights. |

Takes skill to double de-clutch properly....the benefit is simple....300K on a gearbox if you are keeping the car for ever. (like my Saab 900T). Having said that the synchros on the 6MT are really good...but it'll make lazy drivers out of us!
Hey...another 5 years or so and no 6MTs will be available....slushboxes everywhere....yawn! |
