MPE question

Sorry if this question was asked somewhere already I could not find any solid information on it. Is the MPE just the muffler or does it go all the way up to the resonator and cat/downpipe. I live in California where a new law just went into effect where all modifications to exhaust systems are subject to a $1000 fine, not a fix it ticket a straight up fine even if you do not exceed the 95dB limit. I want to replace my stock muffler with the MPE muffler to get a little more sound out of my car (I was simply going to do a muffler delete but that's out the window). Just wondering if I do end up getting pulled over if I can still argue that the car is still technically factory. Thanks in advance and any feedback is much appreciated

So it would just be the muffler then? Not too familiar with these terms I'm trying to learn though.

Yes the MPE is just a muffler and yes it would be fair to say the car "came like this from the factory" but it would be a lie to say that it is stock.

Is that 95 dB limit at idle, a certain RPM, driving by...?

Technically the mpe is offered by bmw, so you could argue that it was driven off the dealer lot new as is “stock” with no aftermarket modification to the car.

Not sure to be honest I haven't looked into it that deep yet. I want to say it can't exceed 95 at any rpm range

Damn that sucks how did it go for you? Do you have the MPE or a different aftermarket exhaust system?

If I happen to get stopped and asked about it since the cuts and clamp would be visible I'm thinking I would say the car didn't have a muffler prior to the new law but I installed this one to make the exhaust system legal.

I'd say install whatever set-up you desire and just don't drive obnoxiously around cops.

I'm in LA and straight-piped from the turbo back with one resonator and it's worked for me.
I was sitting at a light today next to a cop and a pretty loud M2 and he didn't bother either of us when we drove off.

Also the ticket is closer to $200 than $1,000.

Enjoy your car, just do it responsibly!

I don't do crazy stuff, I like to speed but nothing excessive. I'm always watching out for law enforcement though I have front window tints and my license plate is sitting up in my dash, you never know if a cop is having a bad day or something. I chose the MPE though because I've been seeing if you don't touch any other parts of the exhaust system it's really not that aggressive sounding just adds a nice tone imo.

in theory, MPE is not aftermarket. it is OEM M-performance, often installed at port or dealership. the only way to install it is cut and clamp.

i suppose the difficult part is convincing the popo

IIRC correctly, the MPE has a BMW stamp and PN on it somewhere. Been a while since I installed mine, but I think I remember that. If you can get them to see that there's no more debate over whether it's "stock" or not

Yeah, I suppose you never know.

I'm in the same boat with the tint and I often take off my front plate as well. Considering the amount of driving I do and the fact that a lot of it involves passing through areas considered "burnt" for modified cars, it's almost surprising how little I get harassed.

Then again there's plenty of other cars for cops to hit with that exhaust ticket before they go for the BMW.

Regardless, MPE is a great choice for staying under the radar but still adding an aggressive tone. I don't think you'll have too much to worry about in terms of having to answer for it

Just installed yesterday! Gonna get sound clips as soon as I can get someone to help me record or I might wait a bit to break it in for the full sound to come out. For anyone wondering install was super easy, hardest part was cutting the old exhaust but luckily for me the autozone where I rented the tailpipe cutter gave me one that looked like new. I was able to use jackstands to support the old muffler so it didn't fall on me once I got the the hangers off, also used the jackstands to support the new one while I put the hangers back on made it super easy. If you don't have jackstands you might need two people you can probably get it back on yourself but it would be a hassle.

I feel like if I lived in california and a cop heard my cold start I might get a ticket, but after that 45 second warm up, he wouldn't even notice. I am catless with a Dinan axle back. I almost feel like Dinan is OEM too lol.

Being catless is a dead giveaway it's pretty hard to hide that smell. Idk if Bmw has a associations with Dinan but I saw the axle back on display near the parts department earlier when I was down at the dealer.

The smell isn't as pungent as everyone on here makes it seem.
