It's only logical. It will be based on the 8-series, but with just one door.

Quality has went to hell since 2011 and the uber-rich that potentially wants a 9 series will want quality and not have the car stay at the dealer for over a month each year :
I'm on my fourth BMW 3/4-Series from 2012 (leasing times etc. made upgrades good choice)

None of them *knock under the table* have had a single issue other than normal wear like brakes etc.

9? running out of single digits.. 0?

Thats when we go alpha numeric. A1, A2, but A is for Audi.

I have yet to listen to a single track (I don't want to) but seriously these idiots are hard to avoid if you even look at TV or social media on a minimal level.

Yea... I don't think that counts. You change your car every year and half. How does that count towards reliability or quality?

This philosophy won't produce long term success (in terms of perception), just pumped-up momentums. I'll pass.
Mercedes doesn't know anything about "subtle", only about "oppulence" and "obvious"; they became so commercial oriented/obsessed, they started to forgot about their values and what's even more surprising is that they started to copy everything that allow them to stay under the radar. Shameful, for a company that wants to be a leader.
I don't see you how can drive an AMG GT and say this afterwards. I thought it was a great drive and a step in the right direction after the SLS.

It's chassis is more sportscar than anything BMW has put out since maybe the M1.

Regardless, I don't see much point in a 9-series but that class is much less crowded than the $70-130K sportscar market.

It's also much easier vehicle to develop with the new modular platforms.

Seriously...not another big ass sedan.

Agree with above. They totally lack anything to compete with the 911.

The implementation of a Luxury BMW sedan more exclusive and above The 7 has always been an idea at BMW.
Back in the late eighties BMW developed Project GoldFish - An idea under then Research & Development chief to "one-up" Mercedes-Benz on rumours that the V12 W140 was coming as a response to the BMW 750iL V12.

He envisioned a luxury sedan above BMW 7er, The 9er. Topped by the V16 which would be the true symbol of Reitzles flamboyance and engineering skill.
However it's development was halted when the late eighties Financial crisis happened which also killed the BMW 8er Cabrio, BMW M8 and a re-engineered 8er Coupe which was to extensively overhauled to include the M8s B Pillar to add more structural rigidity. It's main failing.

Now we have The 8. And The X7 to spearhead BMWs new luxury order as well as a forthcoming Update of The 7. Which appears to be extensively updated to feature elements from the VFL concept car such as Slimmer headlights and a extremely large kidney grille that dominates its front end.

The VFL after its debut in Beijing was taken across the world and shown to particular customers in order to gage a response to see whether a BMW would fit within this market.
Potential customers did add that they would like a BMW that not offers exclusivity but also still be a large sedan that they could drive themselves as well as being chauffeured in the rear in luxury. Cars in this market are more for to be driven in but not driving alone. The Maybach is one example that driving on your own means you that you more likely to be mistaken for the chauffeur.

VFL proved that the market exists for more exclusive BMWs particular ones that can be driven. It is this research which has led to The 8 and The X7. Which X7 will be available with optional Individual rear seating. Which will allow the X7 to not be about utility but also a level of exclusivity and luxury unseen in a BMW SUV. Having seen the composition in an X7 M50d it will make the X7 hugely appealing in key luxury markets where the SUV is king.

How about bringing back a short wheel base 7 Series. Do it as an M product with the V12 you get in the 760. That would be something.

Imagine how much development money is being wasted on these 9, 10, 11, 12, etc...etc....etc...

well let's see...in 2014 a bit over 4000 Rolls Royce were sold. I'm guessing Maybach and Bentley's versions of the stretched saloon have similar figures. So seeing how this 9-series would be down market version of the Rolls, I'd say there will be people who'll buy it.

So maybe you can just say: "said myself", and it'll be more accurate.

This is what the British magazine CAR says about the i8

"Carbon-constructed 3-cylinder hybrid supercar thats fun for four, as fast as an M3 and does 40mpg. Minor demerit: looks like it's crimping off a 911. Verdict Fascinating and fabulous futuristic sports car

did you even read what he wrote? He's talking about the future, 2 generations removed from today. You're talking about the present.

IF what he said is true (which I think it a very good possibility), then BMW would have beaten Porsche to the punch.

you guys realize what you're asking for right? You're asking for BMW to make a car that cannibalizes its halo performance car the M3.

Ask yourself, if they made a version of the AMG GT, would you still buy an M3?....

Also, if it was so damn easy to make a 911 competitor, then everyone would have done it and put Porsche out of business. The reality is, most every other major manufacturers are in the business of making people movers not sports cars. Even Porsche couldn't stay with making sports cars. The Cayenne sales is what is funding all their car development.

In the same way the AMG GT cannibalizes sales from the C/E class? Don't think that argument holds water. And in the same way Merc makes SUVs l, it's also managed to build the GT. Ditto Audi and R8. So there is zero reason BMW can't.

The i8 was an interesting exercise but doesn't compete with any of the above.

I still would have bought the F80 for the 4 doors. But I might add another BMW if they did a 911 competitor rather than send my money elsewhere for a track machine.
