Engine bay water drainage
Don’t know where else to post this so if a mod can move it to the appropriate forums I would appreciate it,
Otherwise, I was washing my car and popped the head to do some cleaning and I noticed on the passenger side of the engine bay, water was draining right onto a bunch of wires!! I know this doesn’t shouldn’t be right. Luckily there was a debris of leaves blocking the drainage hole so I was able to use a microfab to soak the puddle of water up before it spilled onto the wires right below the drainage hole . This is a f32 so I’m asking if others f32 engine bay looks similar to this and if your drainage hole is right above a bunch of wires. For now I’m goibg to plug that hole with something so when it rains it doesn’t drain right o. Top of it . In picture 2, that was where the leaves were and the water was stuck there. If there were no leaves blockage there, water would be running down below right on top of those wires (pic 3) Last edited by phoizgood415; 06-14-2019 at 11:14 PM.. |

You're OK - drains are there for a reason, but our F30 held a lot of water on those plastic parts when it rained or was washed. Dry it if you feel like it. Keep the leaves, etc., out of the way.

Can someone with a f32 n55 confirm for me that the passenger side engine bay Is indeed like that? I suspect I might be missing some extra rubber piece that leads the water away from wires, I’ll even PayPal you $3 if you can send me a pic. |

I don’t believe there is a drainage hole in that depressed area (which is there for the wiper in right hand drive cars) unless a hole was previously drilled to allow water to drain from that depression. I myself did drill a hole there but made sure it drained away into the proper drainage area. You should plug that hole if it’s not draining into the drainage area. Are you the original owner?

I don't think that cowl drain is dripping water on those wires under normal use. It's similar to the gutters on your house. It drains the water to a screened drain deep down in there.
I can't stress enough on keeping that area clear on leaves and crap. That cowl drain system will cause issues when clogged. Here's a picture of mine from last year when a tree decided to crap on me. It took me an hour with a shop vac and a small hose taped to end to suck out the cowl drain.

I know this is an old thread, but I just came up with the same question. Glad I am not the only person questioning decision by German engineers to dump water where the wire bundles are.
My F30, 2018, original owner. Design the same as yours on the water drainage. |

The gaps between the wires allows water to travel through the wires and ingress into the cabin area through that bulkhead. The only way to waterproof the bundle is to use flexible wire sealant between the wires (a pain), or to wrap the bundle in plastic to shield the bundle from water. A plastic shield could probably be fabbed by a 3d printer to clip onto the bundle like a little umbrella

The gaps between the wires potentially allows water to travel through the wires and ingress into the cabin area through that bulkhead. If it was happening we'd have innumerable posts about wet cabins. We don't.

I added some bathroom sealant along the top piece of metal and created a kind of umbrella with a plastic bag redirecting water away from wires. This seemed to stop water getting inside the cabin
