131,000 miles w/no problems and now I found this post...
Happened to me last Saturday, took off from a light, it bucked and said something about power train, limp home, and died. no check engine light!?
got towed home and it just would not start. until about 9pm. started up and held 4000 RPMs for about a minute. then slowly dropped rpms and died a final death around 2000 rpms. cry emoji inserted here. Was making 50+MPG coming back from AZ a few weeks ago (75mph w/AC on). now dealer says $11,697.37 for a complete fuel system replacement!? i didn't know Bosch made suicide bomber HPFPs. sooooo glad i wasn't 50 miles deep in BFE when this PREVENTABLE catastrophe happened. Called BMW USA 1-800-831-1117 and had my issue escalated to see what if anything BMW will help with. gotta say, wind is out of my sails on this car. I used to tell everyone how reliable it was and how impossible the fuel economy was. i kept it 100% and did all maintenance including trans and differential oils because this was supposed to look good and run well for 1 million miles... here's a pic of my damaged pump now with 100% more metal shavings... i would be happy to spend $1,000 every 100,000 miles to avoid this problem, but over 10 grand on a surprise, your car is worthless as of Saturday? please god no. |

I'd be curious if there was a very recent fill up with diesel or not as well

Bringing my car in tomorrow to the dealer to check on the HPFP after receiving the following codes:
247500 247600 Have a minor lack of power/acceleration and a whining noise under load at high rpm's. The whining is an issue I haven't heard from anyone else but it most certainly is a whine, not a boost leak type sound. Hoping my KermaTDI tune doesn't raise issues with the dealership Max EDIT: sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck. Car died while driving and didn’t attempt to restart it, hopefully no major damage! Last edited by clemsonf31; 03-09-2021 at 03:10 PM.. |

Woof - Keep us updated. If I were you I would flash back to stock. However, that might clear the codes. |

No shavings is good, because all the fuel follows that path. Shavings WILL be there if it has issues. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Perhaps the incorrect area to ask but does anyone know if the sensor on the back of the fuel rail that has the plug at 90 degrees requires removal of the fuel rail to replace?

I think you'd have to remove rail to get it out yes. I just did the valve cover gasket and removed the rail, so I don't think there would be any other way. I'd replace the HPFP metering unit first, and then go from there. The next valve is a little harder to change, but it's not horrible. You can have the fuel rail off in about 25 minutes of efficient wrenching.

Replaced all 3 sensors today. For those interested; the fuel rail must be removed to remove and replace the pressure regulating valve. Easy process overall.
I would also recommend replacing the screws for the fuel quantity control valve. I ordered replacements but the valve itself came with new hardware as well. Car threw codes on startup, but I believe it's from the rail being empty. Cleared codes and we'll see what happens Max |

Car is back in the dealer from severe loss of power. BMW Engineering is requesting info/readings from dealer to which dealer doesn’t have proper tools? Frustrating process overall.

If possible, I would temporarily revert back to stock. BMW engineering may look for tuning. The data readings are through their ISTA system and it's called FASTA data. I don't see how a dealer wouldn't have tools for that... Hope it gets solved soon! I'm curious to know the cause. |

Max **EDIT** They are telling me to have the fuel filter and in-tank supply pump replaced first. HPFP isn't giving them any improper readings Last edited by clemsonf31; 03-22-2021 at 01:50 PM.. |

As an update;
Have replaced my in-tank fuel pump and fuel filter, car is doing fine thus far and will perhaps alleviate my fueling issues. Wouldn't have expected the supply pump to fail so soon (89k on car) but could be a result of PO diesel choices. Max |

Wow, that is unusual and surprising. Those don't generally fail, thank you for the updates!

multiple system failure
well, count me in on the high pressure fuel pump failure as well. F31 LCI 328d, 2016, 81500 miles. HPFP shredded itself. EGR is kaputt as well, as is the evap line which has a puncture (how the hell would that happen?), plus oil leaks and a leaky rear diff, luckily all covered under warranty. Car was purchased about a year ago with around 57K miles under CPO. So either the dealer selling the CPO'ed car did not inspect anything, or things can go south very quickly even with regular maintenance and proper attention to detail while driving and when washing it...

Wow! Sorry to hear of your troubles. Glad the warranty covers it all!
When you say "leaky rear diff" are we just talking a bit of sweating around the seals? Or enough to be wet and drip? Were you experiencing any intermittent rumbling from the rear-end?

Update:
Fueling issues still present, throwing CEL's for low pressure every time I drive the car. Still fighting with the dealership about replacement as it hasn't completely 'failed' yet. Flashed back to stock from Kerma Stage 1, let's see what happens! Max |

HPFP has been replaced and car seems to be good, gas mileage improved slightly as well. I attempted to submit claim through BMW RP but they informed me that due to the part not being replaced by a BMW dealership, they will not reimburse for this expense. Rather annoyed by BMW NA currently but glad to have a functioning car.

If you choose to personally fix the car, then you've chosen not to take advantage of the warranty. BMW will repair the car under warranty, if you choose to take it to the dealer network. If you had an extenuating circumstance (like you are stranded hundreds of miles from a dealer), you may well be able to get BMW to reimburse a repair that they would have performed under warranty.
I only post this so others are aware - BMW warranty means BMW dealership repair. Now if a warranty gets extended, and you repaired in the inbetween time at your expense, they will often reimburse that repair.
