M Performance LSD install cost

I am thinking about installing the m performance LSD on my 2017 340i Msport with (mppsk, m performance brakes, m performance suspension, Dinan cold air intake) but my dealership wants $1800 for installation (approx. 10hrs) on top of the $2600 for the part. Is $1800 and 10 hrs labor accurate and reasonable for this install?

Sounds way too much for me, but having the prizes from Germany in mind: paid for my Quaife LSD 2500 Euros including the modification of the existing diff. Means: for that prize they took the old parts out of the diff and installed the Quaife parts in it and exchanged the LSD in my vehicle.

I was waiting there for the car exchange and all was done in 3 h. Don't know what your guys want to do all the day long?

I had the M Performance LSD installed on my F30 2015 335i. Isn't a 2017 340i also an F30? So the rear differential design and installation procedure should be the same. The BMW dealer book hours on an F30 LSD is 3.5 X $160/hr (in my area Philadelphia) so most dealers were quoting $560. A couple of ripoff dealers quoted over $700. The price that you got is ridiculous unless there is something different about your car than a typical F30.

Most independents don't have the experience or special tools needed to properly install an F30 rear differential. The previous model was much easier because the half shafts bolted on but the F30's are held on with a small circlip that requires a special tool to remove.

I'd even question a particular dealer as to how much experience they have and ask to talk the the actual tech who is going to do your installation and ask him to show you the tools. I'm not kidding. My local dealer just assigns jobs in sequence so they would hand it to their least experienced guy. Just stupid!

Attached are some photos of mine being installed.

Just got quoted $800+ from my BMW service center. They're nuts.

Just found this on BMW.com

At the very least they should be charging $674

Had the BMW Motorsport LSD installed in my 2015 435i RWD-8spd Auto last fall (2019).
Ordered it from getbmwparts.com... paid $673 and change (taxes and shipping). Some people got it as low as $471 from the dealer directly.
Note, this was a closeout thing with BMW last year. Normally this guy is about $2000 +/-$250 for the F3X cars.

I had a local BMW CCA club shop do the install. Was quoted 2.5 hours at $185/hour.
I was $462.50 out the door.

Before you guys use the dealer or "indy" shops, ping you local BMW Car Club of America website please. We've vetted A LOT OF SHOPS over the course of decades (Norcal club is over 50 years old) and club friendly shops WILL not only give you the best price, but their work is top-notch and their mechanics and owners tend to also volunteer/run/help with various auto-x and driver schools. A good shop will TELL you right over the phone the cost of the install and hours. AND if you are a BMW CCA member, labor is 10%-15% off!

I'm a 20 year+ member.

Had the Indy dealer I bought my car from do my LSD install. I typically do all my own work but I was short on time for a while when I got it done. Without ‘special’ treatment I was out the door under $400. I went to the local BMW dealer and they wanted $800+ before the extras like disposable items and what not were added on. Big thing is though is that I trusted the Indy to get it done right. I would have paid someone else a little more to be sure it was good to go.

f30 335i here, I also went the Indy route. Found a reputable shop that works on BMWs and around $350 bucks later (labor + diff fluid) the mLSD was in. When I called around, all the bay area stealerships were quoting anywhere from $800-1200 bucks for the install which is quite something
