According to iihs, BMW improved safety in 2016 and 2017

I noticed it when reading the historical result. But I also notice the change seems to be more than just "suspension geometry", but also the rigidity of chassis as the A pillar intrusion decreased (from unknown to 8 cm to 3 cm) too.

2015:
The driver space was not maintained well. The footrest was pushed in toward the driver 40 cm, while the instrument panel intruded as much as 16 cm.

2016:
eginning with 2016 models, a front suspension change was made to better control wheel movement during small overlap frontal crashes.
The driver's space was not maintained well, with maximum intrusion of the lower interior of 31 cm at the footrest. Upper interior intrusion was much less, measuring 8 cm at the upper hinge pillar and 5-6 cm at the instrument panel.

2017:
Beginning with 2017 models built after November 2016, BMW made further changes to the suspension and modified the adjoining structure. Wheel movement was much better controlled and the car's performance in the small overlap test was greatly improved.
The driver space was maintained well, with maximum intrusion of the lower interior of 16 cm at the footrest. Upper interior intrusion measured 3 cm at the upper hinge pillar and instrument panel.
