Opinion - a "track edition" 2016 328i

(i ended up getting the 328i mentioned in this thread)

i'm shopping for a f30 328i or 340i with manual transmission
most of you probably know how difficult it is to find a manual in stock these days
so one of the cars available is ...

2016 328i
estoril blue/black sensatec
6-speed manual
m-sport package
adaptive m suspension
track handling package
black grilles
$44.8k sticker

that's IT
the ONLY thing holding me back is the lack of LED headlights ... but i'm willing to spend the money for a replacement (either the eagle eyes or a full on OE-style LED ones)

pros
-has all the handling upgrades possible and m-sport package
-the 2 colors i was considering - estoril blue or mineral grey
-it's available immediately
-it's a lot cheaper than the 340i i was optioning for $54k sticker

neutral
-no frills - i did want driver assist but i could live without it
-no moonroof (used to love it but now i don't want it)

cons
-no ANGEL EYES!! and LED headlights (but i'm going to swap something in)
-no coral red leather like i would have optioned
-the track handling package wheels are meh

would you take the car as-is and slap some LED lights on it?
am i going to regret getting such a no frills car?
just want some opinions

does it have xenons? if it has xenons i'd get it. if it does not and has halogens, i would not get it. you will "spin your wheels" and spend a ton retrofitting it.

Lets boil it down. Is the lighting really the
issue. Or is something else deep down, deep down!! the real issue.

I like sensatec. I've driven with both extensively and other than nice dakota leather smell for the first 30 seconds of getting in the car I don't find the difference significant to me

that b58 though....I would order exactly what you want and just wait

I voted dont. I think a key advantage of F3X is the in cabin convenience tech (hud, nbt nav, hk stereo, etc etc) and that build misses out on that.

If you really want a "track edition" car that's stripped down, might as well get a barebones e90 m3 or other older m car

I think you should try to get the car you want with all the options you really desire. It really sucks wanting an option that you don't have and thinking about it every time you get in the car. The 2016 328i you found sounds really nice but ask yourself is it what you really want? How much are you sacrificing? You're spending a lot of money either way. I think you need to settle on whether you want the 328i or 340i first. Why not post your perfect build for the 328i and 340i so that we can all have a clearer idea of your dream build and then we can reflect on what makes more sense for you.

If you have to ask if it's worth it or not, you should be able to see that it's not. This car misses out on everything it seems. You will be happy ordering the exact car negotiated to the exact price you want

i have seen a few threads regarding x28i vs x35i/x40i dilemma/arguments. each has it's place but basically this is very apples/oranges. i think you'd be compromising/settling with a 328i and be unhappy with it after some time. since you can afford it, just get a 340i optioned how you want.

i'm building without all of those goodies

good idea
i should have done that from the beginning

I was originally building a 328i like this

estoril blue/coral red leather
manual transmission
premium package (for the LED headlights)
M-sport package
adaptive M suspension
driver assist

sticker price puts it about $48.5k
then i realized it's less than $5k less than a similarly optioned 340i because LED is standard so i don't need the premium package

340i
estoril blue/coral red leather
manual transmission
m-sport package
adaptive M suspension
driver assist
$53k

the stripped down 328i that just arrived at the dealership yesterday for me
i will be checking it out in person tonight

I voted "Don't".

That said, is this a car that someone put in for Priority #1 and decided not to buy after it arrived at the dealership? Or is it used?

I ask because my understanding is that Estoril Blue is a Priority #1 option for 2016 3 series, which means the one that is on the dealer lot had to have been a custom order that someone decided not to pick up or someone is selling within a few months of ownership.

brand spanking new off the ship

Interesting. I am looking at the ordering guide and I see that B45 (Estoril Blue Metallic) is a Priority 1 option. Maybe things have changed since June 2015 when the copy of the ordering guide I have was released.

You're compromising. That is not the car you want. Get the 340 with the manual, go down and order it today. It'll be here in three months.

Yes, if you have the luxury of time to wait for a custom order, do that. You get exactly what you want and don't pay extra for impulse, or options you don't need/want. You can shop your order and get a good deal also.

Options for the different 3 series models are pretty complicated, so spend some good time with the build your own to get it right.

I too like the sensatec. If you plan to keep this car longer than a few years, it holds up better. I had the old leatherette on my 2002 E46, leather on my 09 E60 and leatherette on my 09 E82. I like the leatherette better. But I totally get ordering leather for the colored interiors. Saddle and red are my favorite, but if getting black, the sensatec is a good option.

Besides, if this is your everything car, get the 6 cylinder.

Get exactly what you want or close to it. If not, you will regret it for the next 3+ years or however long you own the car. You will remind yourself everyday you should've done it right the first time.

I had an E90 328 that was very stripped down (sports package, xenon were the only options) and it was great but sticker at $36k. $48.5k is tougher for me to accept for F30.

Does it need to be new? You can get a really nice E9X m3 for that F30 328 price and the 340 price is close to F80 M3 euro delivery price if you can find an allocation

we compromised on my wife's 335 (no m sport brakes, extra cooling or back up camera) and i noticed it the entire 33 months I had the car. Nice car, but not exactly what I wanted

I love my 328 m-sport. Wish I had heated seats, harmon kardon, and backup camera. I retrofit the OEM adaptive xenons myself which really was my biggest regret up to that point. Only you can determine if you will regret getting the 4 cylinder. I put a stage 1 on mine and couldn't be happier with the performance. The sound is a let down however.

Honestly the lack of premium pkg and tech pkg make the car you show a pass for me. The tech package is awesome because of the HUD, high def control display, and enhanced phone integration. The premium package includes comfort access and lumbar support, which are also very nice to have. Of course these features cost extra and for that money you could be getting into a less optioned 340i. No easy choices here!

if i was going to order a car, it would probably be the 340i not 328i
reasons for not ordering - the $10k price difference and the wait
and i wasn't completely sold on the 340i ...
it feels wrong that a 3-series costs over $50k

when there were NO cars fitting my basic criteria on the lots, it was one thing
and i was more willing to consider ordering a car
but one showed up with basically everything i wanted except the headlights, it changed my opinion

maybe you guys will see a thread from me complaining about it in a few months ... or maybe i will love it (with just the headlights swapped)
