435D xDrive vs 440i + Short Milage Issue

Hello,

I am currently looking into getting a 435D xDrive or potentially a 440i.

At the moment I am swaying towards the 435D as I like the idea of having xDrive and better MPG.

My only concern is that my commute to work is very short, I commute around 4-5 miles to work (there and back). I also do around a 15 minute country roads drive about 3 times a week. Would this be terrible for the DPF? Would taking it on the motorway once a week for a clear out keep it in good condition?

Or am I better off going for the 440i as my commute is short so MPG shouldn't be too much of an issue anyway, just missing the xDrive.

Any advice would be appreciated

I'd say 440i to be honest.

What's the burning desire for xDrive, out of interest?

I'd be looking at the petrol for such short trips.

Not so sure there will be enough gains on the economy, once you factor in diesel isn't efficient for such short trips. Petrol isn't efficient either, but the gap closes a bit, particularly in winter driving. Plus going on extra trips to help the DPF is counter productive for 'saving' fuel.

xDrive is the problem, if it is viewed as essential.

Personally I think you'd be much better off with the 440i than the diesel. Diesels don't like short runs and you likely won't get a very good MPG return either. My commute is 88 miles a day return and I average around 45mpg but around town on short runs it's only mid 20's at best.

Either that or get a 330e and you'll be on electricity most of the way

In all seriousness, that's not a bad shout at all. My neighbour has one and he's very pleased with it. By all accounts, from what I've heard, they're pretty rapid too.

My mrs uses my 435d for commutes to work (3miles tops) when I am away. The car get a good run when I’m home though (I work away). It has never skipped a beat. Xdrive is a must have for myself, so the f series x40i cars weren’t an option.

I've had a 335d, now have a 340i, as well as a G20 330e... last one I'd choose is the 35d engine again.

Maybe it would be the ideal choice if you were doing 15k miles and upwards, but you won't see much better consumption than with the 40i engine.

Mainly due to this being my first car with a bit of power under the bonnet, don't fancy putting it in the ditch in the good old English weather. Do you think it's not a must have?

440i. You'll get low 20s mpg out of the 35d doing such short journeys so you basically lose the benefits of that engine

My commute is about 80 miles in total which with other journeys gives me about 25k per year. Thats why i chose the diesel

So, ignoring the fact of MPG as it's looking it will be around the same. Would I be better of in the 335D for the xDrive or the 440i for the noise and fun? It's my first powerful car so not looking to end up in a ditch!

Not a must have IMO, unless you live somewhere very remote? Even then a good set of winter tyres will go a long way.

Either way as long as you save that power for dry conditions you'll be fine. If you look at the US forums there's lots of guys wanting the RWD 3/440i, which is considered more "ultimate driving machine" and very rare in the US.

I've got a 440i in the pissing rain of Scotland and the Highlands. You'd have to be doing something a bit daft to spin it to be honest and rwd is more rewarding on a spirited drive.

I do 26 miles a day to work in fairly heavy traffic and wouldn't pick the 435d myself.

Erm ... don't drive like a complete tosser, and you'll be perfectly fine.
Drive like an 18 year old with his baseball cap on backwards and an IQ in single figures, and you'd easily put a 318d in a ditch.

Why not find a 440i xDrive for sale? With such a short commute, gas mileage isn't a decision factor. Get the car that will be most enjoyable to drive.

I've owned RWD, fwd, awd, but the Xdrive is unique because of its rear wheel bias. The other awd cars that I've owned were front wheel biased. I'd say that they were safer in poor conditions but they did nothing to enhance the driving experience. That's not the case at all with xDrive.

Get a petrol xDrive and enjoy the hell out of it! The 340i/440i xDrive is perfect because you'll have the most powerful stock engine in the B58. Loads of fun!

I have a 6 mile drive to work, and when i had the 330d it was doing an average of 28mpg.

The 440i i have now does 26mpg, and i probably drive the 40i more right foot heavy compared to the 30d. Because the engine is more fun and engaging IMO.

Sounds like you don’t really need a diesel if most your driving is such short trips, and as already mentioned going on long motorway blasts just to clear out the DPF will cancel out any possible fuel economy gains due to driving unnecessary extra miles just for that Purpose!

Go for the 440i and don’t worry about not having xdrive, just don’t drive like a dick in the wet.

It has to be the 440i as you'll enjoy the short commute.

I'm home based so love the petrol for the short half mile blast down to my local Costa Coffee drive thru mid morning.

I had a 430d xdrive previously which was amazing but this one gives me a bigger smile by far.
