Headunit display stuck on BMW screen does not work
Hi, I have a 2014 335i with the basic headunit (no nav) and recently it started to die on me. It is stuck on on BMW screen. It reboots every few minutes and loses Bluetooth phone in the process. Then it goes back to just the BMW screen.
I've been reading that this often means the head unit needs to be replaced. Is this certain? Anything else ir could be? I've seen that it is pretty easy to swap out the headunit but how would I get it programmed? Any help would be appreciated. |

Turn car on or acc and depress the volume button for about 30 secs or a little more, display should go black and then start to reboot. That has worked for me several times over the years for a similar situation.

If it's the headunit, the swap is "easy" if you are good with electronics. I'm not so I paid someone but I was upgrading to Bimmertech. Some people here have had decent luck with Android tablets from China that are touchscreen and have BMW software.

I would probably just want to keep the same basic headunit but still not clear how I would program or if I need to take ir to BMW or if there are DIY ways.

I had the same issue with mine. Head unit kept rebooting to the logo.
Since I self warranty my car I bought one of a new head unit off ebay and replaced it. I'd call that job a one wrench on a four wrench difficulty scale. Problem was not all these units are the same so it didn't work. I had to find another one that was specifically a L7 entry nav. (You can find that info printed on top of the unit when you remove it.) Installed that and it worked like a charm. Only problem was it's language was set to Italian. I tried to switch it to UK English but it doesn't work. However French does and I can read French enough so it's serviceable. hope that helps

Pro tip, pull the defective unit out and take a pic of the wiring on the back then cruise eBay for a replacement with the same wiring setup. You may have to be patient but if you can get the same one it should fire right up.

Good tip. My only question is how to I program it once the new hardware is installed or can I buy one that is already programmed?

My US unit did not need reprogramming, I just plugged it in and it worked. The coding exercise appears to be specific to upgraded head units.

I think there are two different issues here. Swapping the screen for another same screen requires no coding. But IF the problem is the iDrive system, then you have bigger issues that will require coding.
All the tips here are based on swapping the screen for another same one and that is plug n play. You really want to hope that the screen is the culprit. |

I’m an E90 owner, not an F30 owner, but the CIC system in both cars is probably very similar. Here’s a link (see the 6th post) to an image of the hard drive: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1398361 Here’s a DIY for installing a new disk (I suggest going with an SSD): https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1426773 |

Compatible head units
Does anyone know if bmw part# 65129335352-01 is compatible with part# 65129357996 or Part#. 6512 9310466-01?
They all look exactly the same based on the pictures I find online, but I am being told that the part#'s must match. |
