FORD has been stepping up to the plate at least with Mustang with an * on the HP number. * obtained on 93 octane.

I was on a road trip with my friend and he said he would gas up my car since I was driving. I went into the mini-mart to take a wiz and after I got out the car was all filled up. It then occurred to me to ask what grade he put in -- and he said 87!! And it was a whole tank! I thought there would be knocking, etc. But to be honest, the car drove fine and I never even noticed a difference.

Other than the single tank of gas that your cheap ass will be able to buy with all the money you saved over the course of the year running a lower grade gas in your $50k car? Issues besides you getting sub par performance and fuel economy due to timing changes, thus negating your savings? No, no issues with this long term at all

Thanks for this - I just learned something new, I was thinking that you 'mercins had really crappy fuel, now I know you just rate it differently. Quick trip to wikipedia gave me the rest of the details too.

When I bought my current car, it had obviously been filled by the dealer with whatever was the cheapest gas available. When I subsequently filled it with premium, I began getting noticeably better fuel economy, and the car definitely seemed to have a more "eager" throttle response. I've even noticed issues (like transient check engine light) when using various different brands, so I make every effort to fill mine only with Mobil premium now.
Filling a premium or performance car with the cheapest fuel is sort of like using generic coffee beans in a $1000 espresso machine, or wearing a custom tailored suit with dull, bargain basement shoes. |
